“We saw somebody with so much potential struggling so greatly,” said Lana Gates, from our community partner, Allen Psychiatry. “She at the time did not believe that she was worthy of anything more than what was right then and there. I really believed that if she took this step that she would have the wonderful life that she’s wanted for so long, she was worthy of that, and she deserved that. She just needed those people around her that were going to show her and help her find what she’s really worth.”

Staff Spotlight: My First Day at Maggie’s - The Magdalen House

Our new Director of Communications, Natalie Young, shares The Magdalen House through her lens, as a non-alcoholic experiencing birthday night, in My First Day at Maggie’s.

“I witness each of them, approaching the podium composed, until they turn to face the room, and encounter an unspoken recognition and a limitless forgiveness, which they have so long ceased to allow themselves. And they cry. And no one is stopped or hushed or shuffled off. There is a nearly unnerving sense of generosity in the room. As each person recounts their journey of recovery, some still very fresh from detox and others veterans, the simple gift of our attention gently washes over them, allowing the rare treasure of unmitigated vulnerability to reveal itself. Come on in, the room seems to say, the water’s fine.

I notice by this time that I am quite literally sobbing on the job.”

Our Story

For over 30 years, we’ve worked toward a single purpose: helping women achieve sobriety and sustain recovery from alcoholism.

Located in Dallas, Texas since 1987, The Magdalen House has played a vital role in changing the lives of thousands of alcoholic women and their families through a spiritual solution embodied in The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

In the 1980s, a group of four women realized an imperative need: there was no safe place in North Texas for an alcoholic woman with no money and no insurance to get help. As fate would have it, one of these women had just learned of a facility in South Texas that was meeting this critical need. In March of 1987, the group drove to Houston to visit and see how this particular place was providing a safe place for women to detox from alcohol at no cost. Within months, The Magdalen House was born.

The original house on Lovers Lane opened in June 1987, thanks to the efforts of these women and the local A.A. community. Now in its 32nd year, The Magdalen House remains the only agency in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to offer comprehensive recovery services – without insurance or state funding – 100% free of charge.
