Dr. Lucy Wallace - Breast Surgeon

Dr. Lucy Wallace - Breast Surgeon Dr. Wallace is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in breast surgical oncology. She’s been performing breast surgery exclusively since 2016.

Dr. Lucy Wallace is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in breast surgical oncology. She completed her general surgery residency and her breast surgical oncology fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Following training, she practiced general surgery for six years, with a special interest in breast and endocrine surgery. By using advanced surgical techniques, including ni**le sparring and hidden scar procedures, Dr. Wallace prioritizes both oncologic and cosmetic outcomes. She wants women to feel whole and like themselves at the completion of treatment. She believes in providing comprehensive and personalized treatment by partnering with each patient, along with members of the care team. Dr. Wallace has a very personal commitment to caring for breast cancer patients, as both her mother and grandmother were affected by the disease. She believes “the future has never been brighter for breast cancer patients; it’s rewarding to be able to usher patients through treatment and into survivorship.” Due to her own family history of breast cancer, she has a special interest in counseling women who are at high-risk for developing breast cancer in the future, helping them make informed decisions about enhanced screening or preventative surgery. In addition to her work as a surgeon, Dr. Wallace has emerged as a leader on Baylor Scott & White’s flagship campus, Baylor University Medical Center. She is the medical director for the Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center at Baylor-Sammons Cancer Center. Within the Baylor University Medical Center’s Department of Surgery, she served as the breast section chief for 5 years. She currently serves as the program director for the Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, training the next generation of breast specialists. Dr. Wallace has been voted a D Magazine Top Doctor by her peers. She has been featured in Modern Luxury Magazine’s 2023 Dynamic Women Spotlight and 2022 Influential Women in Medicine Spotlight. She has also appeared on numerous local and national media outlets helping to educate the community about breast cancer risk, prevention and treatment.

Breast cancer diagnoses are rising among younger women - up 1.7% each year. While the exact cause isn’t known, I think several factors are at play, from genetics to lifestyle and even environmental exposures.

About 6% of breast cancer patients carry a BRCA mutation, and among younger patients, that number doubles.

Alcohol and obesity are on the rise — both established risk factors for breast cancer and recurrence.

And there’s growing attention on environmental exposures like BPA, Teflon, and microplastics — still under investigation but worth paying attention to.

💗 The most powerful tool we have? Early detection.
✅ Annual mammogram starting at age 40 (and don’t skip a year)
✅ Know your family history and talk to your doctor if something feels off
✅ Under 40? Be breast-aware: note changes and get checked if you feel something unexpected

I dove into these trends and what women can do about them in my recent interview with KERA News.

Yesterday, I shared that one in 5 newly diagnosed cancer patients has children 18 years old or younger, and almost 3 million kids in the United States have a parent with cancer, or who had cancer.

Because a child’s functioning is closely tied to the well-being of their parent, it’s important to validate a child’s experience with their parent’s cancer and offer healthy ways to help them cope with their emotions. After sharing the news of your cancer diagnosis with your family, you might be wondering what you can do to support your children as you go through treatment. Kids need care, compassion, and reassurance during this time.

Here are 10 ways you can help your kids cope with your diagnosis (from the NBF).

Learn how to validate a child's experience with their parent's cancer by offering healthy ways for them cope with their experience and emotions.

Your best defense starts with you.

Breast cancer is most treatable when caught early. Regular self-exams, annual screenings, and knowing what's normal for YOUR body can make all the difference.

What to watch for:
▫️A new lump in the breast or underarm
▫️Changes in breast size or shape
▫️Skin dimpling or puckering
▫️Nipple discharge or changes
▫️Unexplained pain or tenderness

Don't wait. Don't ignore the signs. Schedule your mammogram today.

Know your body. Catch it early.

"The price tag for hair preservation has long forced breast cancer patients like Green to make tough choices, with some skipping scalp cooling altogether and others opting for less expensive -- and less proven -- treatments.

Starting next year, New York will become the first state in the nation to ease that burden with a new law requiring private insurance companies to cover scalp cooling for chemotherapy patients."

I hope this sets a much-needed precedent!

In 2026, New York will become the first U.S. state to require private insurance companies to cover scalp cooling for chemotherapy patients.

Women are often confused about the difference between a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram. 🤔

Even more confusing are the results that a woman receives....it’s like trying to read a foreign language.

We need to talk about the different types of mammograms, when they are needed, the results you may encounter and what they mean.
