Chip's Story to Tell

Twenty five years ago, film producer Chip Richie recovered from a case of pneumonia. Shortly thereafter he became short of breathe just walking up the stairs to his office. Despite a lot of arrhythmias, physicians controlled the condition with different medications and minimally invasive procedures.

As the years passed his condition worsened and in April 2021, he was placed on the donor heart list. Within weeks he received a new heart and began to feel the presence of something different inside him. Now he can happily rewrite the ending to his story, give back and be worthy of his extension of life.

Chip and Brian Lima, MD, surgical director of heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Medical City Heart Hospital, describe the transplant process. To learn more about the heart transplant program, visit https://bit.ly/2UZn6gE

Today, Medical City Dallas colleagues honored the life of respiratory therapist Maisha Oni Muhammad-Brinkley by planting a remembrance tree during a special ceremony held outside of the hospital’s emergency department where she worked. Maisha, affectionately called “The Breathing Lady” by some of her patients, passed away on November 18, 2020, after a long battle with COVID-19.

The Japanese maple tree was chosen because it is associated with peace, serenity and magnificence. Maisha’s husband, Reginald, placed a permanent remembrance plaque at the tree’s base and said, “She was an amazing and positive person who breathed life into her patients, our family and our loved ones in countless wonderful ways.”

When the Kueker family discovered their unborn son had a serious high-grade partial fetal bladder outlet obstruction, they found local healthcare options in Missouri were limited. Through networking with regional physicians, they found hope at Medical City Dallas Women’s Hospital.

“Thank you to Medical City Dallas, from our small farmhouse in rural Missouri, for providing lifesaving surgery on our son, Creed, at 30 weeks inside the womb,” says mother Alyssa Kueker. “We are nearing the two-year anniversary of the surgery and think about Dr. Kevin Magee and Dr. Timothy Crombleholme often as we reflect on the joys Creed has brought to our family and community. Creed lights up the Kueker household and is the perfect red-head addition to our family of six.”

As one of only a handful of programs nationwide with the capability to perform the full range of fetal interventions, Medical City Dallas Hospital's fetal surgery program offers world-class care to families near and far.
