A Lifesaving Gift 💙

Nearly 50 years ago, Rick Triola received his first kidney transplant, now one of the longest-living donor kidneys in history. Earlier this year, he learned he would need another.

When Rick shared the news with his family, his nephew Sean Ackerman didn’t hesitate. Traveling from New York to Texas, Sean became his uncle’s living donor. “What is there to think about? He’s my uncle,” Sean said.

Rick calls Sean a hero: “It’s an amazing gift.”

This week, Sean donated his kidney to Rick at Medical City Dallas. Both are now recovering well and looking forward to healthier tomorrows.

Stories like Rick and Sean’s remind us how lifesaving organ donation can be. Choosing to become an organ donor, whether living or registered, gives hope to patients and families waiting for a second chance at life.

Medical City Dallas Hospital leaders are stepping into the shoes of our clinical staff, joining them on a shift to better understand life on our units.

Chief Nursing Officer, Tabitha South, shared her experience: “What a treat to spend Friday with Avery in our cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). Avery joined us in July 2023 as a Nurse Resident after graduating from the University of Arkansas. Since then, she has continued to grow and now cares for many of our highest acuity patients.

During our time together, I saw firsthand her ability to connect with patients and families, putting their minds at ease. Keep shining, Avery!"

🎉 A Special Retirement 🎉

After 43 years of service, we celebrate the retirement of Kim Hughes, who first joined Medical City Dallas Hospital in 1983. Most recently serving on the Respiratory Care team at Medical City Children's Hospital, Kim has impacted thousands of patients and families with her compassion and commitment.

Her colleagues honored her with a surprise July ALWAYS Award ceremony and retirement celebration, sharing that she is leaving behind “big shoes to fill.”

Shannon Mertens was diagnosed with cervical insufficiency, a condition where the cervix opens too early during pregnancy, and needed a specialized procedure to help carry her baby to term.

Because she was already well into her pregnancy, finding a physician willing to perform the surgery was difficult. That search led her to Medical City Women's Hospital Dallas, where she found the expert care she needed. Just one day after learning the procedure could be done, Shannon flew from St. Louis to Dallas and underwent a successful transabdominal cerclage.

Today, Shannon and her healthy 5-month-old son, Graham, are thriving. She says, "If you ever find yourself in the terrifying position of needing to help your unborn baby, I can personally say this surgery was worth it a million times over. It was an amazing experience at Medical City Dallas."
