With the holidays fast approaching, family is likely on your mind. Maybe you look forward to spending time with your family, and maybe you dread it. Therapists talk a lot about dysfunctional families – but your problem isn’t your "crazy family" - it’s when you allow yourself to interact with your family in "crazy ways".

Families tend to be predictable. Use this to your advantage this holiday season. If your mother comments on your weight every year, this year will be no different. If your uncle talks politics at the dinner table, or your sister likes to criticize your parenting skills, then show up knowing this. Arrive prepared. Make an intentional plan, a strategy for dealing with likely family “incidents.”

You – not your family – are ultimately responsible for your holiday experience, so do what you need to do, even if that means foregoing the family holiday all together.

12/05/2022

There’s a reason grandma got run over by a reindeer. Holiday driving can be a challenge. More than any other time of the year, the highways are jam-packed with people heading somewhere in a hurry. A study found that “drivers are 175% MORE aggressive during the holidays than compared to the rest of the year. Additionally, Texas ranks third in the country for the most aggressive holiday drivers, behind Georgia and California.”

When I was younger, I would let in another driver, then I would carefully monitor his reaction. Did he wave to indicate gratitude? These days, when I let in another driver, sometimes they waves, sometimes not. Being a courteous driver is no longer about proving something to myself, nor is it an opportunity to feel morally superior. I let in another driver because it benefits me. It makes me more mindful behind the wheel, keeps me alert and attentive. It reminds me that other human beings are on the road, that we’re all in this thing together. It makes me a better, more peaceful driver.
