The clinic who cooks tamales together, stays together! 🤞🏼We hosted our staff today to kick off the holiday season with tamales which is traditional in Mexico, and here in Texas where we live. It’s labor intensive and “it takes time” 😉 but the outcome is delicious! And quality staff bonding time to boot 😊

Today, all of us at Atlas Chiropractic & Wellness, along with you, commemorate Veterans Day! We honor and pay our deepest respects to the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. 🙏
This day, November 11th, holds special significance as it marks the end of significant hostilities at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany took effect. From there, it evolved into the current Veterans Day in 1954. 🕊️

is a day to celebrate all United States military veterans. It's not to be confused with Memorial Day, which is dedicated to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice, or Armed Forces Day, which honors those currently serving. 🇺🇸
On this day, many businesses and schools close, and employers often recognize their veteran employees through special events. Communities nationwide come together to host Veterans Day ceremonies to express their gratitude. 🌟

As we remember the words of President Woodrow Wilson, "the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory," let us also remember the sacrifices and dedication of all our veterans. 🙌
In 1954, thanks to the efforts of individuals like Raymond Weeks, who proposed expanding Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, and U.S. Representative Ed Rees, who presented the bill establishing Veterans Day, we now have a dedicated day to honor these heroes.
So, as we enjoy our day off or engage in Veterans Day activities, let's not forget to thank a veteran. Whether it's a simple "thank you" or a warm gesture like taking a veteran out for a meal, every expression of gratitude counts. 🍔

Join us in celebrating this day, and use to show your appreciation and give shout-outs to the veterans you know on social media. 📢
Today, we remember, honor, and thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice.

TODAY IS HALLOWEEN!
On October 31, Halloween brings out the ghouls and goblins, creatures, and strange folk. They come creeping about the neighborhood seeking favors over trickery.

People of all ages look forward to Halloween traditions. While dressing up and baking, we carve up glowing pumpkins. Children breathe life into storybook characters while practicing their trick or treat. In twos and threes, they traipse through the neighborhood, collecting their bounty in pillow sacks. A ghost, a pirate, a robot or Dorothy, and Toto. No matter their age, they come to the door. They knock or ring. Here and there, a screech or a boo!

HOW TO OBSERVE HALLOWEEN

Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related "guising"). While many attend costume parties, bob for apples, and light bonfires, others look forward to counting trick or treaters. Many people decorate with sprays of fall leaves, scarecrows, and pumpkins carved into jack-o-lanterns. Attractions include visiting a haunted house, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

However, trick or treating has also changed. In the United States, some organizations offer trick-or-treat events for children to come dressed up and collect candy in a safe environment. They may also offer Halloween parties for children to attend, too.

In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remains popular. Although, in other locations, these solemn customs are less pronounced in favor of a more commercialized and secularized celebration.

Because many Western Christian denominations encourage, although no longer required, abstinence from meat on All Hallows' Eve, the tradition of eating certain vegetarian foods for this vigil day developed, including the consumption of apples, colcannon, cider, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

For the safest Halloween trick or treating tips, be sure to check out the Centers for Disease Control guidelines. Then, get your spook on and use to post on social media.

HALLOWEEN HISTORY

The observance dates back to an ancient pagan harvest festival marking the end of summer and the beckoning of winter. Seasons overlapped during Samhain (pronounced sah-win), and revelers believed the worlds of the living and the dead crossed. The living would wear costumes and light, bright bonfires to help protect them, allowing them to interact with the spirits.

Similar celebrations honoring the dead took place in Roman traditions, which were gradually blended and soon replaced the Celtic ceremonies. However, All Martyrs Day, established by Pope Boniface IV in 609 A.D., was eventually moved by Pope Gregory III to November 1. Later, it became known as All Saint's Day. The eve of this celebration became known as All Hallows Eve or Halloween.

Through the Colonial era in America, Halloween celebrations were considered taboo due to religious beliefs. By the Victorian era, though, Haloween traditions featured fall festivals, parties, and foods involving communities and neighborhoods.

TODAY IS NATIVE AMERICAN DAY!

Native American Day, observed annually on the second Monday in October, celebrates the cultures and contributions of the many Native American tribes. The observance is also known as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

While it is not celebrated in all 50 states, it is recognized in both California and South Dakota and gaining popularity in the rest of the nation. In other parts of the country, Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrations occur on this day. Events such as traditional dances, art displays and ceremonies have begun to replace Columbus Day practices.

The observance focuses on celebrating the culture, heritage, and history of tribes across the nation. Each diverse nation carries its own traditions, rituals, and beliefs. The day celebrates their knowledge, contributions and enriching heritage. It's also a reminder of their enduring legacy of strength, energy, and fortitude.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIVE AMERICAN DAY

Learn about Native American cultures. Attend events near you. Visit art museums or read books by Native American authors. Learn about Native American history. Explore the language and efforts to bring lost language back. Use to post on social media.

NATIVE AMERICAN DAY HISTORY

The South Dakota legislature unanimously passed legislation proposed by Governor George S. Mickelson in 1989 to proclaim 1990 as the "Year of Reconciliation" between Native Americans and whites and to change Columbus Day to Native American Day.

In 2021, President Joseph Biden issued the first presidential proclamation for National Indigenous Peoples' Day.

TODAY IS LABOR DAY | FIRST MONDAY IN SEPTEMBER!

Labor Day on first Monday of every September recognizes the men and women who labor to build this country. Through a time-honored tradition with roots in the coordinated efforts of the labor movement of the 1800s, we salute the American workforce.

Since the founding of the United States, the country has relied on its workforce for its infrastructure. From its streets and buildings to its transportation and security, the nation runs on labor. The labor of what we create, build and harvest fuels our education and inspires our dreams.

This National Day also signals the official end of summer. Those who work hard, need time to play, too. With the school year starting and summer winding down, the long weekend beckons. They use the extra day earned to spend with families and catch some R&R. Some will explore cities while others will seek outdoor adventure. No matter where it’s spent, it’s well earned.

HOW TO OBSERVE LABOR DAY

Many families spend Labor Day weekend on vacation. They pack the campgrounds full or explore tourist towns for one last hurrah! As you celebrate this day, consider and appreciate your hard work and how it has added to the well-being and prosperity of our country. Use to post on social media.

HISTORY OF LABOR DAY

On September 5, 1882, Labor Day first honored workers in New York City. The observance later moved to the first Monday in September in 1884. However, the observance wasn’t officially recognized by any government entity until 1885 when a municipal ordinance was passed. Interestingly, Oregon recognized the day in 1887 before New York state’s bill passed. As more states recognized the observance, its popularity grew. Then, in 1894, Congress declared the day to be a national observance.

TODAY IS NATIONAL SON’S AND DAUGHTER’S DAY!

National Son’s and Daughter’s Day on August 11th brings parents and their children together for quality time. On this day, be with the joys of your life.

Let your children know that you are glad they are part of your life. While listening to the events of their day, share family stories. Find out about their hopes and dreams. Learn what inspires them. Teach them something new, or maybe there’s something they can teach you. Enjoy every day you have with them and spend as much quality time as you can.

Time with our children can be fleeting. Not only do they grow quickly, but their interests and needs change, too. Whether we realize it or not, sons and daughters look up to us. They emulate our behavior – the good and the bad. As much as times change, children don’t. We craved our parent’s approval and acceptance. Our children do, too.

Every child is different. Their personalities uniquely fitted to them. While one child devours books, another may deconstruct every electronic device in the house. The chatterbox keeps us awake on long road trips and the night owl keeps us alert to everything under the stars. No two are the same. That’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. Celebrate them and the parts they play in your family.

HOW TO OBSERVE SON’S AND DAUGHTER’S DAY

Do something special for your children today. If they are at home, go for a walk, or enjoy a local park. Send a card or make a phone call to grown children. Remind them how special they are to you.

Use on social media.

NATIONAL SON’S AND DAUGHTER’S DAY HISTORY

The earliest record National Day Calendar could find of an August 11th observance of this day took place in 1988. It’s mentioned in a Nanaimo (British Columbia, Canada) Daily News article dated August 12, 1988. While we were unable to identify the creator of National Son’s and Daughter’s Day, we did find other earlier events with this name.

According to an article in the August 20, 1944, St. Joseph News-Press/Gazette, in 1936, J Henry Dusenberry first pursued the idea of a Sons’ and Daughters’ Day. The thought occurred to him after hearing a child ask why there was no such occasion. Through his efforts, the day started in Missouri and spread. Parents placed a flower representing each of their children in a vase and put the vase in a prominent room in the house. Throughout the day, parents thought about their children as they gazed at the flowers, especially those who no longer lived in the house. By 1945, the celebration reached its peak at 22 states with organizations participating in the event.
In the following years, organizations such as the Lions Club and women’s auxiliaries would host Sons and Daughters Day in their municipalities. However, these observances would change from year to year.
Then, in 1972, Florida Congressman Claude Pepper submitted a request for the establishment of a Sons’ and Daughters’ Day on behalf of Georgia Paul of Del Rio, Texas. According to the Del Rio News-Herald dated October 28, 1972, the request suggested the proclamation would observe the day on last Sunday in January annually. However, neither the House nor the Senate signed a bill or joint resolution to declare the day.

TODAY IS NATIONAL COUSINS DAY!

National Cousins Day on July 24th recognizes the lifelong relationships that grow among cousins. Our first friendships often form with cousins as young as infants and endure a lifetime.

Whether cousins grow up together in close-knit families or only see each other occasionally, they share common memories through grandparents, aunts, and uncles. At family gatherings, cousins entertain each other and get into trouble together, too. They celebrate birthdays and might even blow out the other’s candles to their cousin’s annoyance. When their siblings irritate them, cousins become an ally. Sometimes cousins seem more like siblings, especially if they’re only children.

As cousins grow up, watching their children grow reminds them of their youth. And that’s when the cycle begins anew.

The day celebrates every age of cousins – new baby cousins and cousins whose babies are all grown up!

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

Gather up your cousins and take a photo. Send a text to your cousins who are too far away. If you need to hear their voices, give them a call. Reminisce over the good times. Be sure to laugh about those things that didn’t seem so funny at the time. Post photos on social media using .

NATIONAL BARBERSHOP MUSIC APPRECIATION DAY | JULY 13
Can you hear that sweet music? On July 13th, National Barbershop Music Appreciation Day celebrates a ca****la style of music and commemorates the anniversary of one of its musical societies.

Barbershop music’s roots lay in African American culture and their traditional improvisational music from the 1800s. Folk songs and hymns sang in four parts led to the four-part harmony of barbershop music.

“There is no bad day that can’t be overcome by listening to a barbershop quartet. This is just truth, plain and simple.” ~ Aldous Huxley

While many of us may associate a ca****la music with a quartet, entire choirs also sing barbershop. Barbershop groups also comprise people of all ages and from every background. Their performances can be heard at local events or national competitions. The music is often uplifting, spiritual, or merely fun and features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies.
Across the country, organizations like the Sweet Adelines, founded on July 13, 1945, bring women of all ages together. The melding of their voices makes crowds swoon to fun tunes. Much like the men’s organizations, the women also compete. They tune their voices and rehearse while also performing locally.

HOW TO OBSERVE BARBERSHOP MUSIC APPRECIATION DAY

Our ability or inability to sing does not prevent us from celebrating National Barbershop Music Day. One thing is certain, if you listen to some four-part harmony to start your day, you’ll likely start it off right. We also suggest several other ways to celebrate!

Attend a barbershop performance.
Share your group’s performances online.
Organize a barbershop performance. Take your quartet or entire choir to the streets and pop up in a park.
Surprise people on the street with a sweet serenade.
Join a barbershop group such as Sweet Adelines International.
Support local organizations that rehearse and perform together.
Learn to sing a ca****la.
Encourage others to share their talent.
Discover the history of barbershop music.
Share your celebration using on social media.

NATIONAL BARBERSHOP MUSIC APPRECIATION DAY HISTORY

Sweet Adelines International founded National Barbershop Music Appreciation Day in 2005 to commemorate the organization’s 60th anniversary. On July 13, 1945, Edna Mae Anderson founded the organization in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Today, it boasts almost 21,000 members worldwide.
