While most people are at least vaguely aware of what probiotics are and why they're important, postbiotics remain slightly more obscure. Well, as we wrote in a recent blog post, "Think of probiotics as the chefs...and postbiotics as the delicious, health-promoting meals they create!" In other words, postbiotics--also known as postbiotic metabolites--are the crucial substances produced as a natural byproduct of beneficial bacteria living and thriving within a microbiome. Postbiotic metabolites include specific nutrients, peptides, short chain fatty acids, and much more. Postbiotics are great...which is why we include them in our probiotic supplements! Have you had your eyes examined in the past year? August is National Eye Exam month, and since the month is already halfway over, you can consider THIS your reminder to schedule an appointment with your optometrist if you're overdue for one! Interestingly enough, just as human guts and skin have microbiomes made of "good" bacteria, "bad" bacteria, and other microorganisms, so do our eyes. And keeping this particular microbiome robust can play a role your eyes' overall health and well-being. Check out this blog post discussing contact lens eye diseases to learn more!

Last week, we gave you a crash course in Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 ("ME-3") and its connection to glutathione, aka the body's "master antioxidant." If our discussion about the history and science behind these two has piqued your interest, then we've got great news: Reg’Activ by Essential Formulas is an entire product line that specifically uses ME-3 and our proprietary blend of fermented pre-, pro-, and postbiotics to promote better health and wellness! Choose from an essential blend to cover all your bases, or take a targeted approach with formulas designed specifically for heart, liver, or immune system support!

Probiotics have caught the eye of Vogue online--and no, it's not because some eccentric fashion designer has come out with a pillbox hat that doubles as a dietary supplement carrying case (though that WOULD be pretty neat!). Instead, this article from British Vogue offers three simple suggestions for keeping your microbiome happy, and one of their ideas is to "incorporate probiotics into your diet." At Essential Formulas, we've long been proponents of the idea that good gut health plays a major role in long-term wellness and beauty. So, as far as we're concerned, probiotics are ALWAYS in fashion!

"Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3" may be a bit of a mouthful, but this little species of bacteria packs a major wallop! Along with a host of other health benefits, Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 (or just ME-3) is widely prized for its ability to increase the body's level of glutathione--AKA the "master antioxidant" critical for cellular health. Glutathione is notoriously difficult to supplement on its own, which is where ME-3 comes in. You can read more about glutathione, ME-3, and the Estonian scientist who figured out the connection between the two by checking out this 2018 post on our blog.

If you remember being able to eat three pieces of pizza at a time in college but can now only manage one slice without getting heartburn, then it probably won't surprise you to learn that the human GI system tends to change with age. And while some shifts are normal and natural, certain unhealthy practices can definitely contribute to a weakened, prematurely aged gut. This article from Eating Well discusses 10 gut-UNfriendly habits to be on the lookout for; give it a read so you can give your gut microbiome break!

Happy International Beer Day, folks! Whether you're a huge fan of this sudsy, malt-based drink or prefer other types of boozy beverages, beer is fairly ubiquitous in our everyday lives. It's also got a rich history (both in America and abroad), and the science that goes into making the perfect brewski is actually pretty interesting stuff! We hope that anyone planning to celebrate International Beer Day today has a fun, safe, legal time doing so...just don't forget to take your probiotics, as well, because while beer IS fermented, it's not exactly gut-friendly!
