Here are 4 REASONS why post menopausal women are more at risk for gum disease….
(The truth is, during post menopause, women’s risk for gum disease is extremely heightened. This is a time that’s more crucial than ever for awareness.)
1.) Reduced estrogen levels. This can cause your gums to become more sensitive, leading to increase inflammation and a higher risk of gum disease.
2.) Dry mouth. Menopause can lead to dry mouth, which reduces saliva that helps wash away bacteria and plaque.
3.) Bone loss. Lower estrogen levels can also affect the bone density in your jaw, making your teeth more vulnerable.
4.) Changes in immune response. A weakened immune system can make it harder for your body to fight off gum infections.
The good news is.. you CAN help protect your gums during menopause. Make sure to:
1.) Maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Brush twice a day and floss daily to remove plaque and bacteria.
2.) Stay hydrated to help combat dry mouth, and consider using a saliva substitute if needed.
3.) Be sure to visit your dentist regularly for check ups to catch any signs of gum disease early!
