Function of behavior describes what purpose the behavior serves. There are 4 primary functions of behavior:
โœจ Attention
๐Ÿ’™ Escape/Avoidance
โœจ Access to tangibles
๐Ÿ’™ Automatic/sensory

In order to bring meaningful behavior change to the lives of our clients, we need to understand the behavior and foster behavior change in a manner that is safe, ethical, effective, and efficient.

To understand the behavior, we need to know the function, or why itโ€™s happening in the first place. Then, behavior analysts can make a plan for how to address the behavior moving forward.

ABA Unfiltered Season 5, Episode 4 Teaser

Tune in tomorrow for ABA Unfiltered as Dr. Shahla Ala'i Rosales and Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe discuss the importance of family guidance! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ

Shahla Alai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Behavior Analysis at the University of North Texas. Shahla has over four decades of experience working with families and has trained hundreds of masterโ€™s level behavior analysts who have gone on to serve families and communities with honor. She was awarded an Onassis Foundation Fellowship for her work with families, was the recipient of UNTโ€™s prestigious โ€œProfessor Grahamโ€ teaching award, received the 2019 Texas Association for Behavior Analysis Career Contributions Award, and the UNT 2020 Community Engagement award.

Peggy began the Family Room blog after her book, See Sam Run, a motherโ€™s story of autism, was published. The memoir chronicles her son, Sam, who was diagnosed with autism at age 4.

Recently, Peggy and Shahla Alaโ€™i wrote a new book, Between Now and Dreams, covering what every parent (and professional) needs to know about love and science in the treatment of autism,

Skills that children learn while in ABA TherapyโœจJoint Attention

Joint attention is an early form of social and communicative behavior where two people share a common focus for the purpose of interacting with each other. For example, a mother points to a puppy at the park and says to a child, โ€œLook! A puppy.โ€ The child looks at the place her mother has pointed and sees the puppy. In this situation, the mother and the child have engaged in joint attentionโ€”that is, they shared attention to the puppy on purpose.

Research has shown a strong link between joint engagement and communication development. Without joint attention skills, interacting with and developing relationships with others could be difficult.

Family Guidance at BlueSprig 03/07/2023

Family Guidance at BlueSprig

Family guidance is an important component of autism treatment because it helps parents understand and respond to their child's behavior, communicate effectively, and provide appropriate support. Studies have shown that family guidance can significantly improve a child's behavior and development.

We believe it is essential for BCBAs and parents of children with autism to have access to family guidance programs as part of their child's overall treatment plan. BlueSprig is excited to partner with Attend Behavior, a mobile solution to help busy parents bring out their childโ€™s best.

Visit our latest blog, https://bit.ly/3mx1CoY, for more information on family guidance and Attend Behavior.

ABCs of ABA therapy: SโœจShaping

Shaping is a very powerful process used to create new behavior by reinforcing closer and closer approximations to goal behavior.

Shaping helps reach an end goal, whether it is adding a new routine, acquiring a new skill, or improving on an already existing skill.

We love giving back to our communities! โค๏ธ

Our Mid-Atlantic Leadership teams had a fulfilling day volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte, NC! The teams sorted through and packaged items to be shipped to various organizations.

The next day, the teams met to go over goals and training for the region and enjoyed fun icebreakers.

We are so grateful for our team members that care deeply about changing the world for children with autism and continue to make an impact on their community by giving back.
