For cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, hair loss has traditionally been considered an inevitable side effect. For many patients, the prospect of losing their hair is more than just a matter of vanity. It’s an unwelcome reminder of their disease for the patient and their families – one that can negatively impact self-image, confidence and an overall sense of well-being. The FDA-cleared DigniCap Scalp Cooling System is indicated to reduce the likelihood of chemotherapy-induced alopecia in cancer patients with solid tumors.

Here are some essential hair care tips to keep in mind during this season of fun and sun:

✨ Keep your head protected from direct sunlight by wearing a loose hat. Stylish ponytails, buns, or loose braids are great options, just ensure they don't pull on your hair. Consider using a silk or satin scrunchy for a gentle hold.
✨ When swimming, it's best to avoid getting your hair wet to minimize stress on your scalp and maintain its health. While swim caps are not recommended due to the additional strain they can put on hair follicles, you can still enjoy a dip in the pool or ocean while keeping your hair dry.
✨ If you find yourself in the heat for extended periods, you may choose to wash your hair more frequently. However, it's important to follow the recommendation of no more than washing twice a week to preserve the natural oils that nourish your hair.

“I discovered a mass in my left breast when I was only 37 years old. I have 3 young children and the last thing I wanted to do was scare them or make them anxious if I lost all my hair; especially since they can’t understand or process what is happening in the first place. I started with a LOT of long thick brown hair. I’m estimating I still had at least 90% left after completing 4 rounds of chemo (Taxotere/Cytoxan). Scalp cooling is a gift from Heaven.” - Natasha

New cancer treatments are challenging the idea of what it means to have and survive cancer. A small but growing population is living longer with incurable or advanced cancer, navigating the rest of their lives with a disease increasingly akin to a chronic illness. The trend, which started in breast cancer, has expanded to patients with melanoma, kidney cancer, lung cancer and others.

Keeping an active lifestyle during your cancer journey is both empowering and beneficial, but it's essential to prioritize your health and take precautions along the way.
Here are some valuable tips to help you stay active while safeguarding your well-being:

✅ Pace yourself and listen to your body. Find a rhythm that suits you, and avoid pushing beyond your limits.
✅ Steer clear of the hottest part of the day to minimize the risk of heat-related discomfort. Choose cooler hours for your activities.
✅ Shield your skin from the sun's rays by covering up with appropriate clothing and wearing a loose hat. Remember, chemo can increase your vulnerability to sunburn.
✅ If swimming, avoid getting your hair wet to maintain its health and prevent unnecessary stress on your scalp.
✅ It's hot outside, can I wash my hair more often? Maintaining proper hygiene is essential, and you may consider washing your hair more frequently. However, it's advisable to adhere to the recommendation of no more than twice a week, as excessive washing can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause dryness.

“It was important to me so have some semblance of normalcy and I knew that if I looked like myself, I would feel more confident. It was a blessing to be able to go about my daily activities without appearing to be in active treatment and keeping my privacy. I was also thankful that the children in my family were able to see me as me.” - Cristina
