For cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, hair loss has traditionally been considered an inevitable side effect. For many patients, the prospect of losing their hair is more than just a matter of vanity. It’s an unwelcome reminder of their disease for the patient and their families – one that can negatively impact self-image, confidence and an overall sense of well-being. The FDA-cleared DigniC

ap Scalp Cooling System is indicated to reduce the likelihood of chemotherapy-induced alopecia in cancer patients with solid tumors.

We recommend patients use natural oils such as olive, coconut, or castor oil if they feel their hair getting dry. Avoid the scalp to minimize build up on pores. Also, avoid shampoos with sulfates, parabens and other harsh chemicals.

We have many patients who use diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) to help with itching and flaking. They have recommended starting with 1 Tablespoon of ACV to 1 cup of water, and pour over your scalp and let sit for about 10 minutes. They work their way up to 1/4 cup ACV to 1 cup water. Due to the acidity of ACV, limit this to only a few times a week and not on back-to-back days.

We haven't conducted a study on the effectiveness of ACV, but patients share that doing this 2-3 times a week helps.

Momentum for bills mandating insurance coverage for scalp cooling in the US is growing, with two new bills already passed this year in West Virginia and Maryland, effective January 2027. Some incredibly powerful advocates have been the driving forces behind these bills being passed, sharing their impactful experiences scalp cooling on the House and Senate floors. Connect with other advocates who are working towards bills in your state through the National Scalp Cooling Advocacy Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1194196066006876

Swimming is perfectly fine, but we advise against getting your hair wet. It is recommended to avoid harsh chemicals that can lead to dry hair, breakage, progressive hair thinning and hair loss. It is not known whether chlorine or salt water will damage your hair during scalp cooling.

Using a swim cap is not recommended because of the additional strain it puts on the hair follicles.

If you do go swimming, we advise washing your hair and proceed with the recommended hair care.

After your first chemo treatment with your DigniCap, coolant remaining in the cooling wrap is normal. Between treatments, store your DigniCap and cooling wrap in a cool, dry place. Don't wash your wrap between treatments.

At the beginning of this month, West Virginia became the first state since the introduction of CPT Category I codes for mechanical scalp cooling to pass legislation requiring insurance providers to cover scalp cooling. Starting in January 2027, West Virginia will become the third U.S. state to mandate insurance coverage for scalp cooling, joining New York and Louisiana, where similar legislation has been in effect since early 2026.

A heartfelt thankyou goes to the advocates whose powerful testimonies about chemotherapy-induced hair loss and their experiences with scalp cooling during cancer treatment helped make this milestone possible.
