For cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, hair loss has traditionally been considered an inevitable side effect. “When I received my diagnosis of Breast Cancer my world came crashing down on me. I was overwhelmed with all the moving parts that needed to be completed and were out of my hands - I felt helpless. When I was told I would have to go through chemo, losing my hair was one of the first thoughts that came to mind.

My surgeon mentioned DigniCap and how scalp cooling could help with hair loss due to chemo. I can confidently say it was the BEST decision we ever made! I had no bald spots, only some thinning of my hair. I know that it emotionally helped me very much.” - Angela

Here are some essential hair care tips to keep in mind during this season of fun and sun:

✨ Keep your head protected from direct sunlight by wearing a loose hat. Stylish ponytails, buns, or loose braids are great options, just ensure they don't pull on your hair. Consider using a silk or satin scrunchy for a gentle hold.
✨ When swimming, it's best to avoid getting your hair wet to minimize stress on your scalp and maintain its health. While swim caps are not recommended due to the additional strain they can put on hair follicles, you can still enjoy a dip in the pool or ocean while keeping your hair dry.
✨ If you find yourself in the heat for extended periods, you may choose to wash your hair more frequently. However, it's important to follow the recommendation of no more than washing twice a week to preserve the natural oils that nourish your hair.

"Cancer was a very personal journey for me. Keeping my hair allowed me to control when to include people. While going through active treatment I only told a handful of people. I speak openly about it now and most often people respond “but, you have your hair.” - LaVette

“I discovered a mass in my left breast when I was only 37 years old. I have 3 young children and the last thing I wanted to do was scare them or make them anxious if I lost all my hair; especially since they can’t understand or process what is happening in the first place. I started with a LOT of long thick brown hair. I’m estimating I still had at least 90% left after completing 4 rounds of chemo (Taxotere/Cytoxan). Scalp cooling is a gift from Heaven.” - Natasha

Keeping an active lifestyle during your cancer journey is both empowering and beneficial, but it's essential to prioritize your health and take precautions along the way.
Here are some valuable tips to help you stay active while safeguarding your well-being:

✅ Pace yourself and listen to your body. Find a rhythm that suits you, and avoid pushing beyond your limits.
✅ Steer clear of the hottest part of the day to minimize the risk of heat-related discomfort. Choose cooler hours for your activities.
✅ Shield your skin from the sun's rays by covering up with appropriate clothing and wearing a loose hat. Remember, chemo can increase your vulnerability to sunburn.
✅ If swimming, avoid getting your hair wet to maintain its health and prevent unnecessary stress on your scalp.
✅ It's hot outside, can I wash my hair more often? Maintaining proper hygiene is essential, and you may consider washing your hair more frequently. However, it's advisable to adhere to the recommendation of no more than twice a week, as excessive washing can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause dryness.

Chemo-induced hair loss is no longer inevitable. Scalp cooling with DigniCap can help protect hair follicles, minimizing hair loss. When a patient’s scalp is cooled, less of the chemo agent reaches the hair follicles, significantly reducing damage to the hair.

“It was important to me so have some semblance of normalcy and I knew that if I looked like myself, I would feel more confident. It was a blessing to be able to go about my daily activities without appearing to be in active treatment and keeping my privacy. I was also thankful that the children in my family were able to see me as me.” - Cristina
