What a week to wrap and open 2025 and 2026. This week’s yogic wisdom for this special week is Upekkhā (oo-PECK-kah)—equanimity, the fourth of the Brahmavihāras. A steady, spacious presence that allows life to unfold without grasping or aversion. Not indifference, but balance.

Upekkhā is the sattvic state: not too heavy like tamas, not too stirred like rajas—just right, like Goldilocks finding her perfect bowl of porridge. It teaches us to stay centered amid pleasure and pain, praise and blame, gain and loss. The quiet steadiness that lets us breathe evenly whether a pose feels effortless or demanding.

Through Upekkhā, we learn to care deeply without being consumed. While we cannot control outcomes, we can choose how we meet each moment—with clarity, dignity, and trust.

THIS WEEK’S WISDOM: MUDITA
Mudita, the practice of rejoicing in the good fortune, success, and happiness of others, is one of the Buddhist meditative practices that cultivate an open heart.
Practicing Mudita is easy when we ourselves are flourishing, but its true depth is revealed when we’re struggling and others are thriving. In those moments, Mudita becomes an act of courage: feeling our own ache while still making room for genuine celebration. Mudita softens envy and comparison, reminding us that another’s light does not dim our own.
In a culture that often pits us against one another, Mudita is revolutionary softness. It reminds us that joy is not finite, and that another’s success does not write the ending of our own story. When we open to others’ happiness, even from within our own longing, we discover that celebration and grief can coexist, and that this opening makes space for our own joy to return.
Gratitude to Susie for sharing this wisdom over a decade ago - it has stayed with me ever since.
