Mycotoxins, the toxic byproducts of mold, don’t just affect your environment- they can impact your brain. Research shows these invisible toxins may play a role in triggering or worsening migraines by disrupting neurological and immune pathways. Here’s how mycotoxins could be contributing to your headaches:

1. Neuroinflammation
🧠 Mycotoxins increase inflammation in the brain—fueling pain and hypersensitivity.

2. Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption
🚫 Certain mycotoxins (like Ochratoxin A) can weaken this protective barrier.

3. Mitochondrial Dysfunction
⚔ Mycotoxins can impair energy production in brain cells—leading to fatigue and migraines.

4. Vascular Changes
šŸ’„ Mold toxins may affect blood vessel dilation—commonly linked to migraine onset.

5. Histamine Response
šŸŒ”ļø Some mycotoxins can increase histamine activity—causing headaches and flushing.

6. Neurotransmitter Imbalance
🧪 Chronic exposure can interfere with serotonin and dopamine—both migraine-related.

7. Immune Activation
šŸ›”ļø Mold exposure may trigger immune dysregulation that worsens chronic migraine patterns.

8. Glutamate Toxicity
āš ļø Some mycotoxins may increase glutamate—a brain chemical linked to pain sensitivity.

🧪 Think your migraines might be toxin-triggered?
RealTime Labs offers comprehensive mycotoxin testing to identify hidden exposures.

Mycotoxin detoxification doesn't have to be expensive, but it does pay to know which binders will work for you.

Dr. Neil Nathan suggests, "I do recommend, no matter how poor you are, that you at least get a baseline test so that we know which mycotoxins are present so we know which binders to use".

With summer now officially here, be sure to inspect and clean your air conditioning units regularly, as they provide the perfect environment for mold to flourish.

Mold often accumulates in the drip pan and evaporator coil due to the accumulation of condensation. The warm weather and humid conditions create the perfect environment for mold to flourish. Left unchecked, mold in your AC can spread harmful mycotoxins throughout your home- turning a cool breeze into a health hazard.

A new peer-reviewed study in Environmental Health found that long-term exposure to glyphosate, a chemical commonly used in herbicides, caused multiple types of tumors in rats.

Glyphosate is widely used on food crops, meaning many of us are exposed to it through our diets. This is especially concerning in the U.S., where glyphosate usage is higher and regulations are more lenient than in the EU. With our food supply at greater risk of contamination, the study raises concerns about the carcinogenic potential of glyphosate in humans.

Too often, we attribute persistent symptoms to stress, aging, or the demands of life, overlooking the actual root cause that could be at play. Feeling unwell should not be accepted as normal, yet chronic symptoms from mycotoxin toxicity are frequently dismissed as a typical part of life.

The reality is that mold and mold-related illnesses are becoming increasingly prevalent as we spend more time indoors, and toxins and mold are impacting a greater portion of our indoor spaces.

Mycotoxins aren't a new discovery—they've been a known health threat for centuries! šŸ•°ļø Over 100 years ago, the Japanese Rice Act of 1921 established regulations to protect people from the harmful effects of mold toxins found in cooked rice, effectively ending a health epidemic.

Although we have known about mycotoxins for centuries and long understood their negative impact on health, we are only now beginning to grasp the full extent of their effects.

From chronic fatigue and brain fog to gastrointestinal issues and water retention, these ancient toxins pose a mounting risk to us today as more of our lives move indoors, and more indoor spaces experience water damage, leading to mold and mycotoxin production.
