In the two years I have known Valerie Johnson, she has only further convinced me of her mastery of physical therapy for Parkinson’s disease.
I’ve had Parkinson’s for 12 years and also work with people with Parkinson’s - my service as a fitness trainer. I’m endlessly fascinated by the progress those with Parkinson’s can make with solid information and spirited dedication. It’s more than just my passion, it’s my work and my life.
Valerie’s intuitive ability to treat Parkinson’s with physical therapy is equally matched by her ability to energize those challenged with the disease. With no hesitancy whatsoever, I would drive the required 75 minutes to watch Valerie Johnson treat a patient with Parkinson’s disease at her Fort Worth practice.
To my good fortune, however, I don’t even have to do that anymore! She recently moved her practice, Balance Therapy, LLC, within about five minutes of downtown Dallas.
Balance Therapy is located along a quaint residential block within the historic Kesler Park neighborhood. The location and building perfectly set the tone for what’s inside: the kind of personal service and friendly environment otherwise obsolete in healthcare today.
This is no mill. There’s no sign-in or elevators or waiting room or levels of security. There’s also no stress, anxiety, or confusion. Everything about your visit is different when you feel like you’re being treated by a caring person rather than a corporation.
Valerie knows she has won you before the consultation even begins. Now you’re about to get undivided attention, information, creativity, and enthusiasm for the duration of your stay.
I recently sat in on one of Valerie‘s sessions with a client with Parkinson’s. If Valerie used a script, it wasn’t visible to me. She quickly got a feel for how the client felt, what they were capable of, and what they would need. There was no sitting the client down for five minutes of exercise while the therapist tends to another matter. There was always 6 feet of distance, but never much more!
Valerie’s lifelong dance background is immediately on display in demonstrations of technique. Dance uniquely informed her of mind-body connections - rhythms so vital that Parkinson’s fragments and eventually obliterates. She meticulously deconstructs movement so as to reconstruct rhythm.
Valerie also has a keen perception of when to critique a client and went to complement.
When dealing with Parkinson’s, patience is mandatory. Understanding is vital. Compassion is most appreciated. These are likely qualities engrained in Valerie as a result of her family’s own familiarity with the disease - her grandfather battled Parkinson’s for 20 years.
I didn’t stay for the whole session. I didn’t need to. I saw an efficient, effective, and enthusiastic exchange that will surely lead to one person’s increased control over this disease.
I witnessed a person and their care partner figuratively breathing easier as the session progressed. The anxiety-producing mystery of Parkinson’s became slightly less vexing over the course of one hour.
It will still be up to the patient to uphold their duties to practice and self-manage between visits. In my opinion, a physical therapist can actually be more valuable when apart from a client - if instilling the inspiration needed to battle Parkinson’s.
Valerie’s spirit and steadfast resolve that one can live well in spite of Parkinson’s is contagious. Her client and care partner were not the only ones to stride out with healthy doses of both last week!
As a person with Parkinson’s and one who engages them, I am extra appreciative of Valerie’s type of expertise. I am extra grateful she practices within my community!
