You don’t owe your younger self a life that you have learned is no longer what you want. Take time to check in with yourself and be intentional about your daily habits and choices. Maybe your current situation is actually giving you an opportunity to reevaluate and think about the life you want to create now that you know what you know?

Friendly reminder- just because you have “always” been this way or have held these strong beliefs, doesn’t mean that you can’t change. There can be fear in letting go of an identity or belief you have held on to for so long, and at the same time by loosening the grip, you make space to explore and better understand who you are today and the life you want to lead moving forward. Self-compassion does not mean we are off the hook for our actions. Rather, it reminds us that we are imperfect beings impacted by things that are out of our control- childhood experience, genetics, life circumstances, culture and beliefs, etc.

By responding with understanding and compassion to ourselves in the midst of our mistakes and missteps, we create space to see ourselves more clearly and do what’s needed to make things better without consuming ourselves with added shame. Self-compassion responds with understanding, curiosity and acceptance not punishment and judgement.

We live our lives in patterns; therefore, in order to shift and evolve, we need to identify and understand how the pattern typically plays out in our lives and why we might have used it to survive. The more aware we can become, the more intentional we can be in responding and making choices about how we move forward. Just because you have always done it that way, does not mean it is currently serving you or helping you create a life you feel good about. Evolve or repeat.

“How will you know that you are suffering if you are repressing your pain, rationalizing it, or busy with problem-solving?

You must allow awareness of your pain to enter in. Being mindful is about noticing what is happening in the moment and having no judgment about it.

Notice your hurt and just be with it, compassionately and with kindness.

And note that trying to make pain go away with self-compassion is just another way to repress pain and hurt. Self-compassion is about being with your suffering in a kind, loving way, not about making suffering disappear.

We will always have pain. But as Shinzen Young has noted: Suffering = Pain x Resistance. The more you resist your pain, perhaps by trying to make it go away, the more suffering you will experience.

Mindfulness allows you to stay with the pain without the resistance.”

“Every time you judge someone else, you reveal a part of yourself that still needs healing.”

The more willing you are to acknowledge and accept that suffering is a part of the human condition and we all have flaws, the more secure you will become and the easier it will be to extend grace and compassion to others.

Be curious when you notice yourself being critical or judgmental of others, as it might lead you to understanding aspects of yourself that still need healing.

Be generous and kind not because you have to, but because you can. ❤️
