The Butt family, who started the H.E.B. and Central Market grocery stores have been long time members of supporters of Scottish Rite for Children. Last week, at a charity golf event sponsored by their company, they raised $225,000 for the hospital! I had the honor of accepting their donation alongside one of my all-star patients, Scotty, who was born with and later developed . Because of generous donations like this, we were able to treat his condition with a and he is now back to doing all the wild and crazy things kids love to do. Many thanks to Central Market and H-E-B (and their vendors) for keeping the mission of Scottish Rite alive!

On this particular weekend I am on daddy duty with the toddler, watching and on Netflix, while I edit a review paper on . This picture encapsulates what the life of an academic pediatric spine surgeon is. Work-life balance is truly a moving target with multiple life roles overlapping, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now spell it with me M-E-E-K-A-H…Meekah!!!

Sky was diagnosed with early-onset scoliosis at just 8 years old. As she grew taller, the curve in her spine doubled in size, causing pain and limiting her activity. Now, just six months after her posterior spinal fusion, she’s pain-free and fully cleared to return to cheerleading. We love giving kids their childhood back!

I had an amazing time in Scotland at the IMAST meeting hosted by the Scoliosis Research Society. Together our team presented 5 podium presentations related to treating children with scoliosis. I presented on our new invention developed at Scottish Rite for Children that allows remote monitoring of forces experienced by the spine during halo gravity traction.

Scotty was born with a condition called phocomelia, leaving him with only one normal-sized limb. (Though he never let that stop him from being as active as possible!) However, when he started to develop scoliosis, we had to put our heads together to figure out how to maintain the spinal motion he needed to stay active while also correcting his curve.

Today, Scotty is a year out from receiving a vertebral body tether, which has gradually corrected his curve from 80 degrees down to 11 degrees! With a tether, the story is never truly over, but I am so excited about the progress Scotty has made!

So many parents and kids ask me what does life look like after for . Well Leo is 6 months out from his fusion and is loving being almost an inch taller. He stopped needing pain medication 2 weeks after surgery (like most of our patients) and now is ready to get back to sports again.

There is so much more to being a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon than doing the actual "surgery". Especially early in your career you go through multiple emotions: elation after great surgical outcomes, borderline depression when you have a complication that affects someone's child, fatigue as you try to build a practice in a new location, etc. How to deal with these emotions as a surgeon generally isn't found in a book. That is why it was so refreshing to join pediatric orthopaedic surgeons on a panel to talk through how we tackled these challenges in our early years of practice. Kudos to OrthoPediatrics for sponsoring this session at IPOS.
