đź’ŞIt is an opportunity to create a healthy lifestyle that works for the individual. It is creating a new relationship with food and their new body.

Connie Cox, MS, RD, LD here. I frequently hear that folks have incorporated collagen supplements into their diets. They believe that it will help their hair, nails, skin, etc. While it's true that collagen makes up a good portion of these parts of our bodies, collagen as a supplement is less than ideal. It's made from ground-up hooves, hides, bones and skin and compared with other protein sources it's rated 0 on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the best. That's because it's missing one of the essential amino acids. It's better to take in complete, highly rated protein sources such as whey and eggs.

Connie Cox, MS, RD, LD here. Are you taking iron and calcium supplements? It's important that you not take them at the same time. They compete for the same receptors and calcium wins! So make sure you separate them by at least two hours to assure proper absorption. For the same reason, don't take your iron supplement with milk, yogurt, cheese, or other high-calcium item. It's also important to follow your surgeon's instructions on getting your labs checked. For those of us who've had bariatric surgery, we must be sure our nutritional needs are being met! You matter!!!
