If there is a thickened capsule (capsular contracture) or a silicone rupture, then the entire capsule is often removed. This is called a total capsulectomy. An "en bloc" type of total capsulectomy means that the entire capsule is removed with the implant still inside the capsule. A partial capsulectomy is another option for some patients. This allows the pocket to heal but some capsule is left behind. If the capsule is left in place (implant removal only), then there is the possibility that fluid could build up inside the capsule. This is called a seroma.

Here’s a common myth we hear a lot: Breast augmentation increases your risk of breast cancer.

The truth? There’s no evidence that breast implants cause or increase the risk of breast cancer.

While implants don’t affect your risk, regular screenings like mammograms are still very important to stay on top of your health.

Fun Fact: The American Cancer Society states that breast implants do not prevent breast cancer from being detected in mammograms, and special techniques are used to ensure the images are clear for women with implants.

Dr. Laurence Weider

Dr. Weider, a native of Southern California, is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who has maintained a private practice in Dallas, TX since 1999. After attending Stanford University, he obtained his medical degree (M.D.) from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He then completed a one year surgical internship in Los Angeles at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, followed by a four year general surgery residency in Dallas at Methodist Medical Center, and a two year plastic surgery fellowship in Cleveland at Case Western Reserve University.

While at Case Western, he trained under the guidance of Edward Luce, M.D., a past president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and past chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
