Do you crave sweets? If yes, you may not be getting the proper sweet-tasting foods. And no, this doesn't mean sugar and sweeteners. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

In Ayurveda, every food is put into one of the 6 taste categories and has a unique set of qualities (hot, cold, light, heavy, moist, dry).

The Sweet Taste is formed by the Earth + Water elements and primarily balances the ๐™ซ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™– and ๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™– ๐™™๐™ค๐™จ๐™๐™–๐™จ. However, sweet tastes should be eaten by all ๐™™๐™ค๐™จ๐™๐™–๐™จ as it nourishes and strengthens the body and calms the nervous system.

We often think of foods that are "sweet" as sugary foods like pastries, candy, etc. However, what I commonly see with a new client is not enough fruits and vegetables and an avoidance of whole grains "because they'll make me fat" or, "I am gluten-free".

Whole grains like quinoa, basmati rice, oats, barley, and amaranth are your body's preferred energy source, the fiber helps to bind stools and they are a great source of pre-biotics. Unlike processed grains, whole grains will disperse energy throughout the day, keep your stress levels low, and won't give you a big mid-afternoon crash. They will prevent sweet cravings which will reduce the amount of sugar you consume. I recommend consuming them at the beginning of your day along with soaking, sprouting, and eating them with spices.

Other foods that make up the sweet taste are most of all fruits and vegetables, dairy such as ghee, cheese, butter, and milk, and of course sugar in any formโ€”raw, refined, molasses, maple syrup, honey, etc.

By incorporating a variety of tastes + qualities throughout the day, our ๐™–๐™œ๐™ฃ๐™ž, digestive fire will be stable, we won't crave sweet or salty foods, and therefore we will see less of a tongue coating, ๐™–๐™ข๐™– (toxins), and we will build strong ๐™ค๐™Ÿ๐™–๐™จ (immunity).

Who loves carrots? ๐Ÿฅ• ๐Ÿฅ• ๐Ÿฅ•

You won't regret adding them regularly to your meals as they are packed full of nutritional benefits:

- promotes healthy skin
- lowers your risk of cancer
- supports healthy weight
- regulates blood pressure
- known to reduce heart disease

Because of their high vitamin C content, carrots, are immune boosting and supports cell turnover. In addition to incorporating them into my meals, I love adding carrot essential oil to my facial serum! ๐Ÿฅฐ

They are high in antioxidants making them great for heart health, the high potassium helps regulate blood pressure, they make an excellent brain tonic and aid in deep thinking.

One of my favorite carrot recipes is this simple carrot subji - meaning vegetable dish, modified from Dr. Lad's cookbook. Great for breakfast, or added as a side dish for lunch or dinner.

Medicinally, this recipe can be great for the treatment of hemorrhoids, water retention, and because of its high iron content, it's an excellent blood builder.๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿฉธ

Ingredients:
4 C of carrots, grated
1 handful of fresh cilantro, chopped
2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and chopped fine
2 TBSP of shredded, unsweetened coconut
ยฝ C water
1 TBSP ghee
ยฝ Tsp black mustard seeds
ยฝ Tsp Cumin Seeds
1 pinch hing
ยผ Tsp Salt

Directions:
* Wash and grate the carrots medium/fine.
* Add the cilantro, ginger, coconut, and water into a blender and blend on high until liquid.
* Heat a saute pan on medium and add the ghee, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and hing.
* When the seeds pop, add the blended mixture, salt and cook slightly.
* Stir in the carrots, cover, and cook on medium heat until just tender, about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Diet culture is a set of expectations that values a person by their weight, shape, and size, rather than the health and well-being of their mind and body. ๐Ÿค

The word โ€œdetoxโ€ has all the buzz and can bring feelings of shame as if their body is toxic.

Itโ€™s easy to get caught up in the detox culture and I am being more intentional with my thoughts and language.

Ayurveda suggests seasonal cleansing or as I like to say โ€˜seasonal resetโ€™ and its primary purpose isnโ€™t to lose weight, restrict or โ€œdietโ€. This is what my client told her Dr. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ as she moved into remission from Crohnโ€™s Disease.

I recently supported a client who was referred to me by a Physician at UTSW (an amazing Dr. BTW!) we often refer clients to one another and there is a mutual respect for each of our work. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

While a nutritional plan, grocery lists and herbal support were key in our journey together, the biggest part was the mindfulness and relationship she created with food.

Hello September!

This holiday weekend, I hope that you are planningย something fun, healthy, spontaneousย (we Pitta's needย that!), and to just enjoy being around those you love!

For manyย years, Free Day of Yoga has been a big deal in Dallas. This picture was taken of me teaching at the FDOY event 10 years ago at the Trammell Crow Center. I was 6 weeks pregnant with my daughter and my son was 3.5 years old, on the lawn practicing yoga while I taught. I'll never forget it! The music, the energy, and how all the studios came together as one to spread the love of yoga. You could take a yoga class on this ONE day for FREE at nearly any studio in town.

I am so grateful to our teachers to help keep this spirit going and who have offered their time to be in our space to share the love, energy and healing that this ancient practice has to offer.

Coming home ๐Ÿชท

Iโ€™ve been talking a lot this past week in my classes and with clients about the felt sense of โ€œ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™๐™ค๐™ข๐™šโ€. Just saying it brings contentment and peace. ๐Ÿ’•

To me, itโ€™s a felt sense of ease, security, dissolving anyone and anything that takes away your joy.

๐Ÿชท Itโ€™s your birthright
๐Ÿชท Your natural state of being
๐Ÿชท You were born as this

When you believe and know this, you can return to it at any time.

Life happens. We get busy. We forget our values. We stop living our truth. We forget our true nature as spirit. We get caught up with all the things and forget how we want and are meant to feel.

How do we come back โ€œhomeโ€ to ourselves? There are so many tools, right?

Breathwork. Meditation. Yoga. Nature. Eating + Living Well. Respond vs. React

I could go onโ€ฆ

But what really helps me beyond the above, is the unfolding into the art of surrendering. โœจ

Ahhhhโ€ฆhave you ever just let something go? That feeling where a ton of weight has been lifted. Surrender to me is quieting the inner critic, releasing perfectionism, constantly reminding myself what โ€œcoming homeโ€ FEELS like a.k.a HOW I want to feel - love, peace, joy, light, authentic, happy - my natural born state.

Easier said. But with consistent practice of living your truth and doing more of what you love you will feel right at home.

I created these healthy snacks for my kids and clients and even if youโ€™re not going to school, try these for a mid-day energy boost! ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

More than a third of a childโ€™s daily calories come from foods they eat between meals. Many โ€œsnacksโ€ are filled with sugar, excess salt, dyes, hydrogenated oils, and gums.

Although it takes a little bit more effort to make your own, these are really simple, easy to make, portable, and will give your gut and brain the nutrient fuel you and your kiddos will feel all day long!

Know that you are born to do this, and everything you need is already within.

These principles offer a guide, and emphasize on valuable tools as you prepare for your birth and post-partum.

These principles can also serve as gentle reminders in difficult moments, when youโ€™re tired, havenโ€™t slept, or are experiencing something new wih your baby that you are not sure how to navigate.

Remember: You are the best and your child is so lucky to have you as a guide here on Earth ๐ŸŒŽ

In ayurvedic medicine there is something we follow and understand that supports bringing ourselves back to balance - that is, โ€œlike increases likeโ€, and โ€œopposites bring healingโ€.

When it comes to loving your pitta partner and keeping the summer love vibes chill and calm, itโ€™s all about subtle and simple alchemy.

1. Show Affection - the one thing I always tell my clients โ€œa touch a day, keeps pitta at bayโ€.

Counter excess heat and pitta emotions and display your affection by offering touch therapy with an aromatic lavender head, shoulder, and foot massage.

2. Be Spontaneous- pittas are naturally inclined to be in control while planning every moment of their day.

Adding a little spontaneity to your weekend, an unplanned outing, can open the heart and offer a joyful and playful attitude.

3. Fuel their fire - keep cooling beverages and snacks ready. My favorite is a simple cucumber ๐Ÿฅ’ + mint water or freshly blended watermelon ๐Ÿ‰ + mint juice.

Fresh fruits and salads are a must!

4. Passionate Partners - pittas are passionate, logical and disciplined. Honor their passion while keeping the intensity low by learning something new together.

Spark the creativity by signing up for a cooking or art class and keep growing together!

5. Cool off together - take a evening swim together, with or without your suits ๐Ÿ‘™๐Ÿคฉ, or a walk at the cooler times of day, like dusk or dawn.

Being in nature is one of the best ways to lower anger, resentment, impatience and keep your pitta lover stress free and connected to their true nature as spirit.

Follow these simple steps to create the summer pasta that everyone will love:

1. Boil 8 cups (2L) of water with a little salt to taste, add the fettuccine, and simmer gently for 7-8 minutes or until cooked through. Rinse under cold running water.

2. In a separate saucepan, melt the ghee then remove the saucepan from heat, add flour and stir continuously until the mixture becomes smooth.

3. Slowly add the coconut milk and continue to mix, return the saucepan to a low flame and cook until the mixture is thick.

4. Add pesto (see full-recipe), salt, and pepper to taste.

5. While the sauce is thickening, in a separate pan add 1 tablespoon of ghee and saute the veggies for a few minutes until slightly cooked or desired texture.

6. Mix the sauce with the fettuccine and veggies and serve.
