Greetings from Mysuru,
We have just finished our first week of practice here in Southern India. It has felt like a homecoming of sorts to be back at the feet of our teacher again and among so many friends from around the world. Lots of mini reunions are happening daily at the coconut stand, over coffee or chai, and around tables in the local cafes. Being here is always a reminder of how fortunate we are to be among a lineage of practitioners that spans most of the globe. Between the two of us, Erin and I have been here 11 times now and lots of the locals that we see and spend time each year, now feel a lot like family. The pace of life is much slower here and thatโs one of the big highlights for me. Getting caught up on rest, adhering to a sleep schedule I only dream of back home, and having the luxury of relaxing more deeply each day haven been greatly therapeutic and needed. And itโs just the energetic juxtaposition required in light of the intensity of practice that is done at the start of each day before most of the world is stirring. Our practice time begins at 3:45am again this season. Sharath has told me I will be assisting him throughout December from 4-7am and then I will begin my practice afterwards. Erin will probably be assisting him from 7- 9:30am. This month though, weโre getting to settle in to our full length of practices again, which is nice but also comes with a new host of aches and pains as the body and mind gets back to where it once belonged. No matter how deeply and consistent I can practice at times back home, it pales in comparison to what I give on my mat each day here. I want to say itโs mostly due to the fact that Iโm back in the presence of my teacher, as well as my peers, but thatโs only a part of it. Being here inevitably invites me back home again to me. Back to the quest I began years ago to seek out the best version of myself. Doubts I tend to accumulate as to direction and why I continue to practice and teach this path are dispersed here. Itโs a reminder that I seem to need more often than I care to admit. The tarnish of every day life leaves a residue that is most easily dispelled when Iโm hereโฆ (cont in comments)
Movie Night at the Shala โค๏ธ
โIt connected me how I felt like to everything, because if I wasn't there, the sound never would exist. And I felt like everything was in pieces, and then I stood there, and suddenly we were one large instrument.
I like to go there a lot because it reminds me that I'm not just one seperate piece rattling around in this place but that l'm part of the whole. And I truly enjoy the sound of myself connected to everything." - Marcel โค๏ธ
Please join me in welcoming Authorized Level I teacher,
Erin and I first met in Mysore in 2015. Being both from small towns in Texas, we naturally were friendly from the start. It just so happens that I have been in Mysore each time she has and have witnessed her ashtanga journey unfold, as she has mine. She brings a decade of experience as a dedicated ashtanga practitioner, 5 years of experience assisting Authorized Level II teacher Priya Jhawar at , has run her own mysore program along with at and was Authorized herself last December by our teacher
Her presence offers DAYS practitioners the benefit of a new perspective on practice while maintaining cohesion as we have learned from the same source.
She not only brings her years of valuable experience to Dallas but also 2 of the finest animals youโll ever meet, Mango and Teddy.
Pranams to all who attended Led Primary today and stayed for the breakfast potluck and conference. And a what joy to have another Authorized teacher by my side and assisting today. โค๏ธ ๐
The shala was motionless and silent following yesterdayโs Full Vinyasa Led Primary! Thanks to all who came out for practice, brought food/drink for the potluck, and stayed for conversation afterwards. This connection has been sorely missed over the last two years and Iโm grateful weโre now in a place again where itโs starting to feel a bit more normal.
Thanks to everybody who has come to the shala or attended classes online this last year. Each of you have made it possible for the Shala remain open during such a challenging time. Itโs been a sanctuary for us all amid such diversity and I couldnโt be more grateful to hold this space for each of you. ๐ค
Thank you for the kind gift of orchids that now adorn Patanjali. ๐ โค๏ธ

Meet Gaby. Sheโs been practicing yoga for 15 years. Last month something shifted inside of her and she was able to bind on both sides of Marichyasna D by herself. The joy I felt inside witnessing her accomplishment is what fuels me as a teacher. The bind itself means little but the story of what led to it warms my heart. Years of consistent practice, returning over and over again to her mat to cultivate this relationship with herself. I applaud your dedication Gaby. Youโre a true inspiration to me and Iโm grateful you make our Dallas community a better place with your loving presence and easy smile. ๐ ๐
Grateful for this space and all who walk thru itโs door. Happy Thanksgiving ๐

Vande Gurunam Charanavinde
โI bow to lotus feet of the gurus who have come before meโ (loosely translated)
15 years ago I serendipitously walked into this manโs photography studio and experienced my first yoga class. I just so happened to also walk into my first 12 step meeting that very same day. I didnโt stay sober then and I didnโt maintain a consistent yoga practice by any means at that time but the seeds of both were sufficiently planted and would take root in the season to come.
I generally never know what role a person, situation or circumstance is playing in my life until I look back. In retrospect, Hal was one of my first teachers or gurus in that he helped usher light into my life dispelling my personal darkness. He opened his studio for yoga, among other things, to be practiced there because he is a helper, a space holder, an encourager, a true cosmic cheerleader for others to begin their process of rising, discovering their latent talents and thriving as awakened versions of themselves. He played this role for me and continues to do so when Iโm need a reminder of who I am, where Iโve come from and what I have to offer the world.
So, it was a great honor to have him come in the Shala today and experience what has grown from a seed he helped to lovingly plant and nurture all those year ago.
With endless gratitude, I bow to his feet. ๐
Happy Diwali! Feeling grateful for the love and support of the community today. Last night we shared a meal on the patio at temple and I was reminded that thru my own darkness of 20/2021, these kind souls kept candles burning for me. They held space for me even when I wasnโt aware, they lent ears and shoulders when my heart and head were heavy, and most often, they lovingly reminded me to stay steady and just keep breathing. I couldnโt have asked for better group of folks to share the path with. ๐ ๐ช
Today we celebrate Dai. She bound for the first time in Baddha Padmasana last week and is a joyful, bright light in our community. Great job on staying consistent in your practice, Dai. ๐๐
โMy love of Ashtanga started 15 yrs ago. Being a yoga teacher Iโve practice many styles of yoga but Ashtanga was my first true love. I started going to the Shala off and on about 3 years ago when we moved to DFW- itโs tough since we live south side. When DAYS started virtual classes is when I became consistent with Ashtanga. My many injuries (knee, shoulders, hand) set me back but I find myself right back on the mat doing what I can. It keeps calling me!โ
Tori started practicing with us online during the shutdown and over the months became an inspiration for many here. So when she was finally able to come practice in person a week ago, she was received with open arms like family coming home. Feeling very grateful for the warm, loving community we have here in Dallas. ๐

For the final day of #songofseptember.... โWe are choosing to be here, right now Hold on, stay inside This holy reality This holy experience Choosing to be here in This body, this body holding me Be my reminder here that I am not alone in This body, this body holding me Feeling eternal, all this pain is an illusionโ Also, these shorts ๐ฅ๐ @sulawear #parabol #tool #stopmotion #ashtanga #karandavasana #love4days
Cheesy song choice but the lyrics couldnโt be more fitting. #songsofSeptember One of the my favorite aspects of practicing ashtanga is the power of the sangha, or community. Knowing you have a place where you are accepted just the way you are and everybody wants to see you succeed in your personal efforts is absolutely priceless. A big shoutout to the 9:30 peeps for being thick as thieves. โ
For my 1st shift peeps at 5:30am consistently finding a way to your mats.... โ#songsofseptember โKudos, my hero, leavin' all the mess You know my hero, the one that's on There goes my hero Watch them as they go There goes my heroes Theyโre ordinaryโ
To protect us all against whatever September of 2020 has in store, we have summoned the great rishi Durvasa from the depths of the cosmic ocean!
Utpluthih means to โuprootโ and if 2020 had an official pose, this surely must be it. In ashtanga, itโs our final posture each day before taking rest and we often arrive feeling already spent. The secret to this pose seems to be a useful metaphor for life these days. โขPull yourself together. โขResist the pull of gravity and defiantly lift up! โขStay actively engaged the whole time. โขDraw the senses inward and let the chatter around you slip away. โขFocus on refining the quality of the very essence of life itself, the sacred breath. โขStay calm, relax the face and keep your chin up. โขAnd above all....never give up! (Even Sharathโs count doesnโt last forever.) #persevere โ
Meet our new favorite student, Nihal. Heโs been practicing daily for 6 weeks, hugs mom in between sequences (correct method, see video in comments โค๏ธ) and took it upon himself to learn the Sanskrit posture names of all his poses. Keep your eyes on this young Jedi!! Heโs going places. โข If youโd like to be like Nihal, we have an Intro Series to Ashtanga that begins this Saturday 8/1. We take you through the basics slowly over 5 weeks and you have access to all of our classes throughout August and September. No experience required, all ages and body types welcomed. Full details thru website. Dallasashtangayogashala.com
