Operations for bulging discs and sciatica have been performed essentially the same way since the 1970s. Why settle for 50-year-old surgery?

I’m proud to be part of a new era of endoscopic “sports spine” surgeons!

Imagine enduring relentless sciatic pain for months… and then one day waking up without it.

Dave, an active 39-year-old VP of Sales, can relate. He struggled with constant back pain shooting down his leg for 8 long months. But an outpatient endoscopic discectomy was all he needed to get his life back. During this ultra-minimally invasive procedure, I inserted a narrow camera through a dime-sized incision, allowing me to view his spine in high definition and remove the herniated disc material that was crushing his nerve. Dave was comfortably home within hours, needed no prescription pain medications, and hasn’t looked back since!

🌟 Just wrapped up another incredible Cabo meeting! The State of Spine Surgery Think Tank is one of my absolute favorite meetings. The combination of world class faculty, meaningful dialogue, and family-friendly atmosphere makes it a unique opportunity to teach, learn, network, and have some fun.

I had the privilege of delivering two lectures this year:

1️⃣ The first explored the benefits of endoscopic posterior cervical foraminotomy, a cutting-edge technique for alleviating pain associated with pinched nerves in the neck.

2️⃣ In the second, I shared my vision for the future of spine surgery, predicting a division into two distinct subspecialties: traditional spine surgery and "sports spine." As endoscopic sports spine surgeons, we will continue to innovate, developing exciting new procedures to enhance patient care using this ultra-minimally invasive platform.

Beyond the lectures, the trip was filled with memorable moments, from delicious meals to poolside conversations with surgeon and industry friends. A special thank you to my in-laws for stepping in and watching the kids, allowing my wife and me to enjoy this experience together.

Already looking forward to Cabo 2026! 🌴✨

It was a blast teaching the Ultra-Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Fellowship Forum in Florida this past weekend. I joined an all-star cast of faculty friends in introducing endoscopic spine surgery to the next generation of spine surgeons. The excitement was palpable!

Someday this advanced technique will be standard practice… until then, I’m here for you! 👊😉

Our latest Endoscopic Spine Research Group publication investigates the effectiveness of transforaminal endoscopic spine surgery for the treatment of foraminal stenosis.

For the non-spine surgeons out there, this means placing a narrow camera through a dime-sized incision and using tiny tools to alleviate pressure from the spinal nerves as they exit the spine. This area is notoriously difficult to reach with traditional surgical techniques. The use of an endoscope can be the difference between an ultra-minimally invasive outpatient procedure and a spinal fusion with rods and screws.

🚨 𝗨𝗻𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 🚨

Pinched nerves in the neck can cause radiating pain, numbness, tingling, and even weakness. Symptoms most commonly arise from issues in the mid- to lower cervical regions, but can occasionally come from higher up.

Here is a relatively rare such case of symptomatic C3 nerve compression caused by stenosis at C2-3. I performed an ultra-minimally invasive endoscopic posterior cervical foraminotomy, resulting in immediate relief of his severe pain and numbness. He was comfortably home the same day and rapidly returned to work.

Discover how this motion-preserving approach can effectively release pinched nerves without many of the downsides of traditional surgeries. Dive into the full case study, and learn more about this innovative treatment!

😖 Don’t let sciatica spoil your sleep!

Endoscopic spine surgery is an ultra-minimally invasive procedure in which a narrow camera is placed through a dime-sized incision, allowing the surgeon to “scope” the spine. Disc bulges, bone spurs, and other sources of nerve compression can be cleared out, allowing for rapid sciatica relief without the lengthy recovery associated with traditional spine surgeries.

This wonderful patient traveled from West Texas and couldn’t be happier. So join the club, feel better, and finally get some rest. 💤

I’m beyond thrilled to be recognized again by 𝘿 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙚 as a “Best Doctor” in Collin County. Several of my colleagues at Texas Back Institute and I are among a handful of spine surgeons in the region who have been selected for this designation. Personally, I am grateful for and motivated by this award. It reinforces my conviction that minimally invasive philosophies and techniques represent the future of spine surgery. I’ll continue treating every patient like a personal family member and look forward to many years of service to come!

I’m a little late posting this one, but I can’t stop thinking about it… the Spine Annual Council last week had this endoscopic nerd on cloud nine! 🤓 ⛅️

Eighteen of the biggest names in endoscopic spine surgery from the US and abroad descended on Naples, Florida, for a two day think tank, where we discussed the future of spinal endoscopy and how to get there. We hashed out ideas for new ultra-minimally invasive methods for performing traditional surgeries and brainstormed novel procedures that have never yet been performed. Someday we will look back and identify events like this as formative moments in the new field of sports spine.

Thank you to Arthrex for hosting the meeting and fostering innovation. The sky is the limit as we improve the way we treat our patients! 🚀

🙌 When your patient becomes your hype man…

A frequent occurrence after endoscopic spine surgery! Michael was spreading the gospel within hours of his ultra-minimally invasive procedure:

“𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘨. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘬𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘵 @𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 @𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘮𝘥 𝘔𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘦. 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴!!”

Endoscopy is not just an ultra-minimally invasive version of traditional, open spine surgery. It is a platform that will open doors to fundamentally new procedures. Forget the status quo… the sky’s the limit as we continue to innovate to improve the lives of our patients.
