One day during a university lecture, Professor Sydney Engelberg was teaching when a baby in the room began to cry. The child’s mother, a young student, quickly stood up to leave so she wouldn’t disturb the class.

But instead of letting her walk out, Professor Engelberg paused, went over, and gently took the baby in his arms. He carried the child back to the front, continued teaching, and never missed a beat. He didn’t complain or make a scene — he just kept going while holding the baby.

This wasn’t unusual for him. Engelberg was known for welcoming student-mothers into his classes. He let them bring their kids, breastfeed during lectures, and never made them feel like an inconvenience. As he often said: “A mother should never be forced to choose between motherhood and education. Educating a mother is an investment in the entire nation.”
