Medical insurance can be confusing! Good news is that we have an awesome billing office that is well equipped to help you navigate your insurance benefits. One common issue is “double coverage.” Read below for more information! And as always, we are available for questions! Thank you 😊
————————————————-
Most parents don’t know that their newborn is double covered. Please check with your insurance carrier to see if a newborn has automatic coverage or has to be added for claims to pay for the first 31 days of life. If you are expecting a child and you and your spouse are both insured by your employers, your baby will possibly be covered by both insurance carriers. There are regulations regarding this issue to what they call “the birthday rule”.
• Primary coverage comes from the plan of the parent whose birthday (month and day only) comes first in the year, with the other parent’s health plan providing secondary coverage.
• If both parents have the same birthday, the primary plan will be the one that has been in effect longer.
• If the parents are divorced, with joint custody and a court has not specified which parent is responsible for providing health coverage for the dependent children, the birthday rule would be used to determine which plan is primary if both parents maintain coverage for the children. (Documentation will be required for this)
Many insurance companies will coordinate benefits with the patient at least once a year. Usually this is in a form of a letter or email correspondence stating do you or your spouse have other insurance. Coordination of benefits means that one insurance plan is designated as the person’s primary coverage and the other is secondary. When there’s a medical claim, the primary insurance pays first. Then the secondary insurer will take care of some or all remaining out-of-pocket costs that the primary insurance didn’t pay. In the event that you do not respond to the coordination of benefits (COB) this can result in non-payment of claims.
Flu virus is here 😷 as we are starting to see cases of influenza in the office, it’s a GREAT reminder to schedule your child’s seasonal flu vaccine if you have not done so yet. Good news - we are offering our last outdoor drive thru clinics of the season!!
Please call to schedule (214) 691-3535. And please, as a courtesy to our staff & other patients, please let us know if you will not make your appointment. We would like to serve as many families as we can. No show appointments limit our ability to serve the maximum number of patients.
And we are still patiently waiting for our first shipment of COVID vaccines… stay tuned!

A few changes that we want our patients to be aware of... we also want you to understand the background of this change.
For the last several years we had been able to provide after-hours nursing triage at no cost. Children’s Health was providing the service for us and our patients at no cost. That program has unfortunately ended for us.
As of January 1st, we have contracted with Triage4pediatrics, a nursing triage group we have used in the past.
They do charge us for each call taken. Because of this, we now have to reinstitute a $25 charge per after-hours call to cover their fee.
As always, there is no charge for nurse triage calls taken during regular office hours.
Our After Hours service can be reached by calling our regular office number.
We are continuing to host Drive Thru Flu Vaccine Clinics - here are some tips to ensure you have a great, safe experience! And if you still need a flu vaccine appointment, call us to schedule!
