This patient came to Dr. Armijo having already done the hard work. She wanted her body to reflect all the work. The tummy tuck addressed the excess skin that no amount of effort was going to resolve on its own. The breast lift restored position and proportion.

Dr. Armijo grew up watching his grandmother navigate life after a mastectomy without reconstruction. The prosthetics available then were heavy and uncomfortable, and the procedures of that era left significant physical changes that no one helped address.

That experience did not leave him.

It is part of why he chose plastic surgery and it shapes the way he approaches patient care today.

Massive weight loss is one of the hardest things a person can do. By the time someone gets to Dr. Armijo, they have already done the work. Harley, our medical assistant, has watched that moment. The way she describes it, when the extra skin is gone and a patient actually sees their body, the confidence that comes with it is unlike anything else.

Dr. Armijo did not set out to be a plastic surgeon. He finished his med school requirements ahead of schedule and picked plastics almost as an afterthought, just to fill a rotation.

His first night on call, a woman came in after a serious car accident. The injury was severe enough that amputation was on the table. The plastic surgeon on call rebuilt the arm using the patient’s own back muscle, covering the bone and restoring function that could have been lost permanently.

Dr. Armijo watched the whole thing and thought, this is what I want to do.
