06/07/2023

Arthritis is not just a consequence of aging but rather a broad term that encompasses more than 100 very different disorders, all characterized by chronic pain, limited mobility, and decreased range of motion. Approximately 70 million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis, making it one of the most pervasive diseases in the U.S. as well as the leading cause of disability. There is no known cure for arthritis, but here are some things you can do to manage the symptoms and improve your quality of life:

1. Eat a healthy diet: Certain foods can help reduce inflammation and improve joint health, such as fatty fish, fruits and vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Avoid processed foods and foods high in sugar and saturated fats.

2. Try supplements: Some supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids and glucosamine, may help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement regimen.

3. Practice stress management: Stress can exacerbate arthritis symptoms, so find ways to manage it, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

4. Use hot and cold therapy: Applying heat or cold to painful joints can help relieve pain and inflammation.

Home Health Companions can provide expert caregivers who are trained to assist individuals with arthritis. Contact us today to learn more.

Despite their diminutive size, all nuts provide a powerful nutritional punch and offer a host of advantages for the health of older people. Research shows that consuming nuts can reduce the risk of developing cancer and help maintain heart health.

For example, a meta-analysis published in 2020 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found that consuming more nuts was associated with a lower risk of cancer, particularly digestive system malignancies.

Another meta-analysis, published in 2019 in the journal Nutrition Reviews, highlighted the beneficial role of nut consumption in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular disease and related outcomes based on a review of 19 studies.

Here are six ways nuts can help protect your health as you age:

1. Healthier heart
2. Sharper mind
3. Safeguarded eye health
4. Prevention or mitigation of age-related weight gain
5. Blood sugar control maintenance
6. Eased joint pain

05/24/2023

In the United States, the term "senior citizen" is typically used to refer to individuals who have reached a certain age and are eligible for certain benefits and services. However, determining exactly when someone becomes a senior citizen can be a bit confusing, as there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

The most commonly used age range for senior citizen status in the US is 65 and older. This is the age at which most individuals become eligible for Social Security benefits, Medicare, and other senior-focused programs. However, some programs and benefits may have different age requirements.

For example, some states may consider individuals as senior citizens as early as age 55 for certain benefits such as reduced property taxes or senior housing assistance. Additionally, some private organizations such as restaurants or movie theaters may offer discounts to those who are 55 or older.

It's important to note that becoming a senior citizen is not solely determined by age. Some individuals may experience health issues or disabilities that require them to access senior-focused services at a younger age. Likewise, some individuals may remain healthy and active well into their 70s or 80s and not require senior-focused services until later in life.

In general, the definition of a senior citizen in the US is fluid and can vary depending on the specific benefits, services, or programs in question. It's important for individuals to research and understand the specific eligibility requirements for any senior-focused services or benefits they may be interested in.

Ultimately, becoming a senior citizen is a natural part of the aging process, and can be a time of great change and transition. By understanding the age requirements and available benefits, individuals can make informed decisions and take advantage of the resources and support available to them. At Home Health Companions, we can help you regardless of your age or whether you are considered a senior.

05/19/2023

As we age, our sleep patterns tend to change, and many seniors may find it difficult to get a good night's rest. Poor sleep quality can have a significant impact on overall health and well-being, leading to problems such as fatigue, memory loss, and depression. Fortunately, there are several strategies that seniors can use to improve their sleep habits and wake up feeling more rested.

One effective strategy is to establish a regular sleep schedule and stick to it as closely as possible. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can help regulate the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Additionally, seniors should try to create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as taking a warm bath or reading a book, to signal to their bodies that it's time to wind down.

Another important factor to consider is the sleeping environment. Seniors should aim to create a cool, dark, and quiet sleeping space that is free from distractions such as televisions or smartphones. They may also find it helpful to invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows that provide adequate support.

Regular exercise is also essential for promoting healthy sleep habits, as it can help reduce stress and anxiety and promote relaxation. However, seniors should avoid exercising too close to bedtime, as this can have the opposite effect and make it more difficult to fall asleep.

Finally, seniors should try to avoid substances that can interfere with sleep, such as caffeine, ni****ne, and alcohol. They should also talk to their doctor about any medications they are taking that may be affecting their sleep quality.

At Home Health Companions, we specialize in helping you improve your well-being every day. Please contact us, and we will be glad to assist you.

05/17/2023

According to registered dietitian Alison Liggett Neov of Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads, a senior care facility in Falls Church, Virginia, "the term superfood is not scientifically based or regulated." However, there are several foods that are high in nutrients and should be eaten frequently.

Superfoods, also known as "functional foods," offer an additional boost of nutrients, says Reema Kanda, a registered dietitian nutritionist at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California.

Numerous anatomical and physiological changes can result from aging. According to Kanda, the need for calories, a unit of measurement for energy, declines with age for various reasons, including:

- Digestion-related problems, such as constipation. A 2019 study suggests that aging affects all gastrointestinal system activities, including motility (how food moves through the system), enzyme and hormone release, digestion, and absorption. The study attributes the increased prevalence of constipation in elderly individuals to decreased mobility, cognitive impairment, comorbid medical conditions, pharmaceutical use, and dietary changes.

- Reduction of muscle mass due to aging, also known as sarcopenia. According to a research published in the journal Ageing Research Reviews, muscle mass loss in aging individuals is primarily caused by atrophy and loss of muscle fibers. Researchers have also mentioned a decrease in the levels of several hormones as a potential factor.

- Osteopenia and osteoporosis are two conditions that cause thinning of the bones and an increased risk of fractures. A 2018 study suggests that various factors, such as genetics, nutrition, lifestyle, and comorbidities, can contribute to bone mass loss as you age.

At Home Heatlh Companions, we can provide guidance and meal planning to ensure seniors receive the necessary nutrients to support their health and well-being.

04/25/2023

Living with Alzheimer's disease can be a challenging journey, but there are steps that individuals and families can take to make life easier and more fulfilling. Here are some tips and recommendations from the Alzheimer's Foundation of America:

Stick to a routine: Maintaining a daily routine can help reduce confusion and anxiety for individuals with Alzheimer's. Try to keep meal times, bedtime, and other activities consistent.

Simplify your surroundings: Too much clutter or noise can be overwhelming for individuals with Alzheimer's. Simplify your living space by removing unnecessary items and reducing noise.

Use memory aids: Memory aids such as calendars, to-do lists, and labeled drawers can help individuals with Alzheimer's stay organized and remember important information.

Stay active: Physical activity and mental stimulation can help improve mood and cognitive function for individuals with Alzheimer's. Consider activities like walking, swimming, puzzles, or reading.

Seek support: Living with Alzheimer's can be challenging, and it's important to have a support system in place. Consider joining a support group, talking to a counselor, or seeking the help of a caregiver company. At Home Health Companions we are ready to help.

Remember, every individual with Alzheimer's is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. These tips and recommendations are meant to serve as a starting point for individuals and families living with Alzheimer's. Let's continue to raise awareness and support those affected by this disease.

04/18/2023

Mental health is often thought of as something that the brain regulates. However, in reality, it depends on a complex interplay between genetics, experiences, daily life stressors, and physical health. Our experiences and physical health can change the brain's structure and neuroconnections. According to Debra Kaysen, clinical psychologist and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University Medical Center, "it's like a dialogue between our conduct and what we learn."

Mental Illness Statistics:

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 51.5 million adults in the United States have a mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reports that the prevalence by condition looks like this:

- 48 million adult Americans, or 19.1%, suffer from anxiety problems.
- 19.4 million adult Americans, or 7.8%, struggle with serious depression.
- 9 million adult Americans, or 3.6%, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
7.8 million adult Americans, or 2.8%, suffer from bipolar disorder.
- 3 million adult Americans, or 1.2%, suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorder.
- Only 1.5 million adult Americans in the United States have schizophrenia.

However, given that the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, the percentages for some illnesses may be higher. Although there are no official statistics, research suggests that rates of sadness and anxiety have increased three to four times what they were before the pandemic. PTSD and suicidal thoughts also appear to be on the rise.

Mental disorders are a reality, and at Home Health Companions, we are very concerned that senior adults may not recognize these problems. This is why we offer accompanying services for the management and control of these illnesses for patients and their families. Please call us at 214-295-8213.

Individuals frequently inquire about the potential impact of Parkinson's Disease (PD) on personality. While many of the signs of PD are pretty visible, others, such as personality changes, may be harder to spot. Learning more about the possible underlying causes can be helpful because there may be various factors that contribute to PD patients acting differently.

A person with Parkinson's disease (PD) may experience personality changes as a result of pharmaceutical side effects, pre-motor symptoms, or non-motor symptoms. A deeper comprehension can assist the person with PD, their family, and care partners in approaching the problem with kindness, patience, and calm rather than with anger or resentment. This could significantly alter one's quality of life.

Personality changes are just one of many non-motor symptoms that a person may encounter and are a fair illustration of the potential for mental difficulties and changes. These tools are provided by the American Parkinson's Disease Association (APDA) to assist you in learning more and navigating the complicated realm of personality and mental health issues.

Parkinson's Disease's Impact on Personality: This blog post will offer you some useful background information on the various causes of personality changes, as well as some examples of the kinds of changes care partners have seen.

View of mental health: Mental health issues come in many different forms, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, cognitive decline, and others. This two-page fact sheet can assist you in better understanding the distinctions between these symptoms.

At Home Health Companions, we can help you with your PD. Our team of nurses and caregivers will be in charge of managing your symptoms in the best way, and we will give support to the family to know how to handle the situation.
