Dr. Mae Jemison, born in 1956, is a trailblazing physician, engineer, and educator who became the first African American woman to travel in space. In 1992, she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, contributing to 44 life science and materials processing experiments during the STS-47 Spacelab-J mission. Beyond her historic spaceflight, Dr. Jemison has made significant contributions as a Peace Corps medical officer, educator, and advocate for science, technology, and social change. She founded The Jemison Group, a consulting company, and the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence, which designs and implements science literacy programs.

Henrietta Lacks (1920–1951) was an African American woman whose cancer cells, taken without her knowledge during treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951, became the first immortal human cell line, known as HeLa cells. These cells have been instrumental in numerous medical breakthroughs, including the development of the polio vaccine, advancements in cancer research, and insights into virology and genetics. Dr. Uché Blackstock is a prominent physician and health equity advocate dedicated to addressing systemic racism in medicine. In 2019, she founded Advancing Health Equity, an organization that collaborates with healthcare institutions to confront and dismantle structural racism, aiming to improve patient outcomes and promote inclusivity. In her 2024 book, "Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine," Dr. Blackstock explores the pervasive impact of racism within the medical field, drawing from personal experiences and historical analysis to highlight ongoing disparities. Her work has been instrumental in fostering dialogue and implementing strategies to create a more equitable healthcare system.
