We had the privilege of hosting Councilman Zarin Gracey and Representative Aicha Davis at the Family Hope Center in Oak Cliff. Both legislators have a heart for the Oak Cliff community, and Dallas as a whole.

We had great conversations about the challenges of our communities, and vision for the potential solutions that exist to provide hope moving forward.

Buckner Family Pathways is a program designed to help single parents who are pursuing their education and need to care for their children while determining next steps for their family’s future. The program helps single moms overcome barriers that prevent self-sufficiency, such as education, career prospects, and life skills. At Buckner FP, single parents can break the cycle for future generations and transform into strong, successful and sustainable families.

“What traumas and battles have my biological parents faced that I would never know or understand?”
“What opportunities did I have growing up that my children’s biological parents did not receive?”

Rather than focusing on a list of mistakes and wrongs, it’s important to approach our children’s biological family with empathy. These questions help remind us of all the second chances we’ve been given, how God forgives us time and time again, and how we are called to share the same compassion for biological families. 🫶

Our supervised independent living program NextStep provides females ages 18 to 24 with the support they need to:

👉 Pursue educational and vocational opportunities
👉 Manage finances
👉 Secure housing
👉 Maintain health management
👉 Explore their identity and culture

Foster youth who age out of foster care are left to enter adulthood completely alone without family support and personal connections that young people often rely on. Just because a person turns 18 and is considered an adult legally doesn’t mean one is ready to face all the responsibilities on day one.

When Destiny entered into the foster care system at 17 and aged out of foster care shortly after, she looked at options moving forward and honed in on Buckner NextStep at Buckner Dallas Fort Worth, a supervised independent living program that provides young women, ages 18-24, the support they need to meet their educational and independent living goals and achieve self-sufficiency. Destiny was able to find mentorship and community, pursue higher education, receive financial education, and find support in her job and vocational opportunities.
