What Is a ‘Healthy’ Food? The F.D.A. Wants to Change the Definition.

“The old rule was really outdated — you could create any kind of Frankenstein food that met the nutrient criteria and label it as healthy,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and professor of nutrition at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy in Boston.

I am truly privileged to work with such amazing clients.

"I want to express how pleased I have been with the diet changes and health transformation I achieved under your guidance. When we first met in January 2021, I was 135 lbs and was able to reach my goal weight of 120 lbs - for the past year, I have felt incredibly healthier, lighter, and happier as a result of clean eating. I am so thankful to you for this!" - Alexandra

Real change comes from real effort. It’s about lifestyle modification and realistic goals. Quick fixes don’t really work long term - and haven’t you already tried those already? You are more than the number on the scale.

I see this question a lot. Research does show that antioxidants can have positive benefit to the brain in helping to reduce age-related cognitive decline and to the heart in helping to relax the lining of the vessels. Bonus: new studies indicate regular cocoa flavanol consumption might also have positive effects leading to improved skin elasticity (ie:less wrinkles and less fine lines).

These benefits might help you justify chocolate intake - and that’s ok of course depending on the rest of your lifestyle. However, to get a truly beneficial amount of these antioxidants you really need about 1,000 milligrams per day - way more than you could get in a chocolate bar. This is where diet plays a key role.

Dark chocolate still contains sugar, fat and a low dose of caffeine. Make the most of the indulgence maybe twice a week tops and choose a high quality version with little additives and that is at least 70% dark.

Your body is truly an amazing physiological engine, nourish with whole food nutrients daily and you’’ll be well on your way to efficient detoxification. Why limit it to something extreme once a year? Toxins don’t just come from alcohol- they can come from food, water and the environment. What is important is making sure you are doing everything right to keep your liver and all your major organs in optimum shape.

Want to learn more about how you can detoxify your body for better health, click the link in my bio - schedule a session.

Is your body trying to tell you something? Pay attention to your mood, your energy levels and any cravings...have you noticed anything that seems off? Your body just might be telling you that you're consuming too many toxins.

I get asked often about detoxifying the body. Honestly, I don't recommend any quick fix, extreme detox protocols or diets. The better plan is to learn to reduce the amount of toxins that you consume. You can learn more about how to do this by clicking the link in my bio and scheduling a call with me.

Consistency is key.

I like to remind my clients that it isn't your "date night" or your "girls night out" that holds you back - it's more about the things you do daily over time that causes problems and keeps you from making progress. Changing daily habits is the hardest but also leads to the best results.

If you are ready to change your nutritional habits, click my link in bio and schedule a call.

I have incredible clients and I love getting to help them reach their health and nutritional goals. It means so much when they take the time to leave such kind reviews.
Here's what one of my recent clients had to say:
"Highly educated on nutrition with vast experience. She sets realistic goals and gets to the root cause of your nutrition or diet problems. Doesn’t take any shortcuts to help you reach the specific goal you want as an individual because she gives you a permanent solution." - Nestor M.
I can help you reach your wellness goals through integrated diet and nutrition therapy. If you're looking for permanent solutions to your health and nutrition problems, click my link in bio and schedule a call.

Why Do Carbs Give Me Headaches? 05/17/2022

Why Do Carbs Give Me Headaches?

Foods high in sugar or refined carbohydrates can cause blood sugar to spike, leading to “an outsized insulin response.” Insulin helps normalize blood sugar, but too much insulin can overshoot the goal, leading to low blood sugar (aka reactive hypoglycemia). A headache is one of its symptoms, along with feeling weak, shaky, tired and lightheaded.

Why Do Carbs Give Me Headaches? Experts say we may be thinking about food triggers for migraines and other kinds of headaches the wrong way.

The average adult consumes 77 grams of sugar a day. Sugar can easily sneak into your diet through beverages, sauces, starches and processed foods. In addition to causing an overgrowth of bacteria in your gut, it can lead to inflammation, weight gain, insulin resistance, increased risk for chronic illness and mood swings. Worse news: the more sugar you consume the more sugar you will crave. If you’re interested in learning how to control your sugar cravings, click the link in my bio to book a session.

Photos from Kimberly Young Consulting, LLC's post 05/14/2022

We know sugar should be limited for optimal health, but sugar can be difficult to identify if you aren’t sure what you’re looking for. Reading the label is the first and most important step you can take to improve your health.

Sugar goes by many different names. Be on the lookout for dextrose, fructose, galactose, glucose, lactose, levulose, maltose, sucrose, mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, beet sugar, corn sugar, corn sweetener, high fructose corn syrup, invert sugar, isomalt, maltodextrins, maple sugar, sorghum or turbinado sugar.

That nutrition label is your friend….don’t be afraid to look at it closely. If you want to learn more about how to identify the sugars that are in your foods, click on me the link in my bio to read the full article.
