Dr. David McCall and Dr. Freeland Ackley went above and beyond the call of duty as surgeons—all the way to war-torn Ukraine to lend their expertise and help save lives. The duo credits their faith in spurring them to try to find a way to help those suffering in Ukraine. 🇺🇦

“God opened the door and gave us the opportunity,” Dr. McCall said.

Joining up with a relief organization, they went on a medical mission trip to Odesa, the third-largest city in Ukraine. Though they weren’t on the front lines, it was not uncommon for them to hear sirens at night and rockets flying overhead.

In addition to performing surgeries for both soldiers and civilians, they were able to teach new techniques to doctors in Ukraine and consult on their cases. The surgeons made connections that they hope will lead to future trips and open doors to bring in other aid organizations. They both hope to be able to return to Ukraine soon and help in any way that is needed.

Each returned to the US with a new perspective on life here at home.

“It’s the realization of how much we have to be grateful for, and how guilty I am of complaining about the most trivial things,” Dr. Ackley said.
