Breast implants are made with different outer materials and textures. The outer, pliable shell of an implant is thin, solid silicone, but its surface may be either smooth or textured. A textured surface is thought to help lessen the formation of scar tissue around the implant. A smooth-surfaced implant has a slightly softer shell, and is less likely to be felt through the skin and tissue around the implant.

Q. What do you believe is essential for women to understand before undergoing a breast augmentation?
A. That breast implants don’t last forever and require maintenance. Patients need to anticipate the need for revision or replacement surgery about every 15 years due to a rupture. It could be sooner than 15 years or many years later, but at some point, women with implants need to understand that revision surgery will be necessary.

Your children mirror you, and if you don’t feel comfortable in your body, they may struggle with their body image. Many experts report that it is mothers who have the most significant impact on their daughter’s body image.
