Everything starts and ends with digestion (no pun intended). Just as important as the nutrients we consume are the nutrients we absorb. If our digestion is not functioning optimally, not only can we experience various digestive ailments including gas, bloating, indigestion, acid reflux, diarrhea, and constipation, but we can also experience many nutrient deficiencies that lead to a host of other chronic illnesses. And, if that all weren’t bad enough, we could also dramatically reduce our natural immunity, further increasing our risk of contracting various viral and bacterial infections (yes, even the Big C).

Two supplements that have been pivotal in the digestive journey of many of my clients are Thorne’s (@thornehealth) EnteroMend and Pepti-Guard. Depending on the specific symptoms and health challenges, I would advise on the appropriate supplement/supplements. Digestion is extremely multi-faceted and should be handled with an approach that acknowledges and appreciates this understanding.

It takes courage to say yes to rest and play in a culture where exhaustion is seen as a status symbol.

When did being “so busy” become more valuable that being “so happy”?

When did being “constantly connected to work” become more important than being “constantly connected to our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs”?

When did “the grind” become more prized than “meditation and mindfulness”?

When did “the rat race” become more respected than “rest and recovery”?

When did “run-run-run” become more idyllic than “play and pleasure”?

Look around you. There are A LOT of unhappy and unhealthy people, in your family, in your friend group, in your school, in your workplace . . . stuck in the never-ending game of DOING more and more and more.

Dare to be different. Push back against the societal norms. Take back your life. And don’t wait for the right time to start, because there’s never a “right time.”

Say no to busy. Say yes to rest.

Better sleep with CBD 😴💚

In a 2019 study released in The Permanente Journal, Dr. Shannon et al. showed that CBD supplementation improved anxiety scores and sleep scores in roughly 73% of patients, while also being extremely well tolerated. More and more research has been showing similar or better results with the addition of CBD. While I am a huge proponent of various stress management strategies and many sleep hygiene hacks, I have also personally seen the benefits of CBD in my own routine, and want to share these benefits with you!

Another one of my absolute favorite supplements in the prevention and treatment of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, is NAC (N-Acetylcysteine). Per the attached research findings, NAC is an incredible adjunct treatment option in the case of COVID-19, as well as playing a pivotal role in its prevention. However, as many of us have realized, COVID-19 is not the only respiratory illness of concern, as RSV, flu, and many common colds are also on the rise, contributing to much of what we see in the current hospitalization crisis. With that in mind, and understanding the importance of high-quality nutrition and supplementation in the prevention of respiratory illnesses, NAC deserves strong consideration as a daily inclusion to one’s immunity enhancement.

Now that you know your caffeine, how about knowing your alcohol? 🍺🍷🥃🍸

Thanks to @meowmeix and @corylrodriguez for putting this infographic together.

While abstaining from alcohol can be beneficial for many people, moderate alcohol consumption has also been shown to be beneficial for overall health and longevity. Moderation has typically been defined as no more than 2 drinks per day for men and no more than 1 drink per day for women. However, for optimal body composition, I recommend my clients to eliminate their drinking “on school nights” and limit their overall alcohol intake on the weekends. After working with hundreds of clients over the years, I have found that those that implement this system often achieve the greatest results. What has worked for you?

What is your caffeine jam? ☕️

Thank you to @meowmeix for putting together this excellent graphic. While caffeine can be an excellent pre-workout, as it can both improve performance and increase lipolysis, I have also seen it’s abuse (or overuse) cause significant HPA axis dysregulation. So while I am a proponent of caffeine as an ergogenic aid, I am also clear to warn those with HPA axis dysfunction to choose lower caffeine options (see graphic) or completely withdraw from caffeine for a designated time period.
