✨The Dive Reflex ✨

For people considering a water birth, a question we often get asked is:
“What causes the baby not to breathe under water when they are born?”
It is because of something called the “Dive Reflex.”

Healthy babies have a dive reflex that prevents them from taking their first breath until they are exposed to air.
A baby being born underwater must be born fully underwater and not exposed to cooler temperatures.(Nutter et al. 2014b).
Once the baby’s head emerges from the water, it’s essential to keep the head above water to ensure they can breathe properly.
This transition is critical for the baby’s safety and well-being during a waterbirth.
This is one of the reasons it is recommended to have skilled providers for a safe waterbirth.
Midwives can assess the mother’s and baby’s health, monitor for any complications, and ensure that both are stable before proceeding with water birth.

Proper training and experience help minimize risks and enhance the overall waterbirth experience.

There you have it! The term of the day is “dive reflex.”
Happy waterbirthing! 💦💦💦💦

✨Home Birth Perk✨

The flexibility of home birth allows for a personalized experience, where parents can choose who is present and how they want to celebrate this milestone.
Older siblings can participate in the process at their own comfort level, fostering a sense of inclusion and family bonding.

Additionally, home births often minimize stress related to travel and hospital protocols.
Parents can relax in their own space, surrounded by their own comforts, which can lead to a more peaceful and empowering experience.
The option to involve pets or maintain familiar routines can also ease anxiety, making the transition to welcoming a new family member smoother for everyone involved.

This photo by represents that home birth flexibility so well~

✨Helping Mama✨

This little guy was an active participant during his mama’s appointments, so naturally he wanted to “help mama” in labor.
He held her hand, shared his snacks, and brought his favorite stuffed animals to her.

Upon her reflection, his mama said, “He will never remember helping me in labor, but I will never forget…”

✨What Happens at a 2-Day Postpartum Visit? ✨

We get asked this question a lot, so here are the deets.
If you receive care from your Dallas Birth Midwives, we come to YOU!

Within 48 hours, we come to your home for the 2-day postpartum visit.
The reason for that is so that you do not have to get out of bed, pack a diaper bag, risk a diaper blowout ( both you and baby! ), and ride in a car.

During the visit, FOR BABY we:

✨Do a full assessment and check vitals.

✨Review lactation and offer support. We can also set you up with a lactation specialist, if needed.

✨Perform a Critical Congenital Heart Defect test
https://www.cdc.gov/heart-defects/hcp/screening/index.html

✨Offer the first Newborn Screening test
https://www.dshs.texas.gov/newborn-screening-program

✨Review and submit information for the birth certificate.

FOR MOM:

✨We perform an assessment on mom and check vitals.

✨Provide plenty of time and space to answer questions regarding care for herself and/or baby.

✨Review birth story if mom is ready. 💗

2-day visits are important as they allow us to physically lay eyes on both mom and baby, answer questions and offer support, and provide testing and evaluations that keep both mom and baby safe.

And, honestly, we love to baby snuggles, too.

✨Symbolism ✨

Cutting the cord is more than an act. It symbolizes the separation from an organ that provided months of nutrients to a baby now having to navigate their own way to nourishment.

Talking a partner through this process is always so sweet. Their biggest concern is hurting the baby. Although their are no nerve endings in the cord, it always makes me giggle when they are concerned. 🥰

During a home birth, we typically wait one hour before the cutting ceremony happens. This is to insure baby has received all of its blood and also….there’s no rush. 😉

✨The Journey✨

Making the decision to have a home birth with a midwife is usually made after a lot of research, chatting with trusted resources, interviews to find the right “fit” for you, and a lot of processing.

For many families that come to us, they have had a hospital birth or two or maybe they had a baby at a birth center, and then decide that they are ready for their home birth.
Everyone’s journey is different before they walk through our doors.
There isn’t a right way or wrong way to do things.
It is all a part of your story, your journey, that led you to midwifery care.

We are so thankful for our families that trust us to care for them.
Personally, I am so grateful that this sweet, remarkable family that chose midwifery care for baby #4.
I loved having our chats together and getting to know and involve the older children during appointments.
And I am so thankful for a healthy mama who was able to finally have her home birth, surrounded by so much love and support!

More stunning pics to come!
