Happy 1 year anniversary to Chief Justin Ball! One year ago Chief Ball took the helm at DFR and it’s been a great year of opportunity, innovation, and success! Congratulations Chief Ball!

Here are some of the programs that were put in place during his tenure:

1. Blood program - DFR’s Blood Program allows for life-saving, pre-hospital blood transfusions at a scene for trauma patients. This program has saved dozens of lives.

2. Quartermaster Program- The program brings clean gear directly to the front lines. Our team meets the crew on-scene to swap out soiled bunker gear for fresh, decontaminated sets immediately. This drastically reducing their exposure to carcinogens and long-term health risks.

3. Med1 - The Med1 program pairs a DFR paramedic and a member of the a crisis intervention team (CIT) in a fire department SUV to answer low acuity calls normally answered by a fire engine or truck. The program is a more cost effective way to answer low acuity medical calls keeping fire trucks and engines available for emergencies.

4. All-electric Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Vehicle (not pictured) - Dallas Fire-Rescue will unveil the world’s first all-electric ARFF vehicle on April 29.

5. Life-Saving Awards - DFR gives Life-saving awards each week to crews who respond to cardiac arrest and because of their rapid intervention, high quality CPR, and seamless teamwork results in a patient walking out of the hospital neurologically intact.

6. Fire ground Excellence Award - This award is given to firefighters whose actions on the fireground demonstrated advanced technical skill, sound judgement, and professional excellence under hazardous conditions that directly and verifiably resulted in saving a human life during emergency operations within the City of Dallas.

Today, Dallas Fire-Rescue honored Firefighter John Clark, who died on June 24, 1902 and was the department’s first line of duty death. A memorial street sign with his name on it and last alarm date was placed at the intersection where he gave his life fighting a fire that ended up being one of the worst in the history of Dallas. The fire spread quickly and eventually destroyed 23 homes. Fifteen firefighters were overcome while battling the blaze but survived. Fireman John Clark, who had been manning a line with three other fireman, collapsed and died at the scene.

His great nieces, Paula Wilson and Debbie Dilord, were there to celebrate their great uncle.

John Clark’s legacy and sacrifice will continue to live on in future generations of Dallas firefighters. The Dallas Firefighter Monument at the Dodd J Miller Training Center was created in his honor and fashioned in his likeness. The monument was first placed at city park at Ervay and Gano Streets in March 1903, then officially unveiled on June 24, 1903, one year after his death. The monument was moved to its current location in 1994.

🚒🍀 Dallas Fire-Rescue Proudly Marches in the Dallas St. Patrick’s Day Parade 🍀🚓

Today, members of Dallas Fire-Rescue were honored to participate in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade along Greenville Avenue...one of Dallas’ most celebrated traditions. The parade provided a great opportunity for first responders to connect with the community we proudly serve while celebrating a day filled with fun, culture, and camaraderie.

The parade was led by members of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Pipes & Drums, joined by talented players from fire departments from all over who traveled to Dallas to take part in the celebration. Their music helped set the tone for the day and highlighted the strong brotherhood and traditions shared among firefighters everywhere.

Representing their respective departments in the parade were Dallas Fire-Rescue Fire Chief Justin Ball and Dallas Police Department Chief Daniel Comeaux, who joined members of both DFR and DPD in greeting paradegoers and demonstrating the strong partnership between our public safety agencies.

Dallas Fire-Rescue is grateful for the opportunity to be part of this long-standing Dallas tradition and to spend the day celebrating safely with our community. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the parade...and to the many first responders who helped ensure the event was safe and enjoyable for all.

🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Dallas!

🚒🔥 3 Fireground Excellence Awards and an Outstanding Unit Citation for another Life Saved by members of Dallas Fire-Rescue

Dallas Fire-Rescue proudly recognizes Lieutenant Daniel Civello, Fire Rescue Officer Christopher Hurst, and Fire Rescue Officer Andres Udria with individual Fireground Excellence Awards, along with the members of Engine 30, Truck 43, Engine 35, Rescue 30, and Rescue 41, who were awarded an Outstanding Unit Citation for their coordinated efforts during a structure fire rescue that saved a civilian life.

On February 10, 2026, crews responded to a reported structure fire at 3163 Modella Avenue. Engine 30 arrived to find heavy fire showing from the Alpha side of a one-story residence with conditions rapidly deteriorating and a reported life hazard inside.

Operating in rescue mode, Engine 30 initiated a Vent-Enter-Isolate-Search (VEIS) on a Delta-side window to locate the trapped occupant. As fire conditions intensified and flames began lapping at the window—the crew’s only exit point—the firefighters worked with urgency and discipline inside the IDLH environment.

Lieutenant Civello and Fire Rescue Officer Hurst located the victim during the search and moved her to the window for removal. At the sill, Fire Rescue Officer Udria maintained the exit point, extinguishing advancing fire and preserving the only viable escape path before safely extricating the victim.

Meanwhile, the additional responding units played critical roles in fire attack, ventilation, search, and rescue support, ensuring conditions improved and the rescue could be completed safely.

The victim was removed and transferred to awaiting medical personnel. Without the decisive and coordinated actions of these firefighters, the outcome could have been tragic.

👏 Congratulations to all members recognized for this life-saving rescue.
