We are thrilled to announce Eugene Barnes as one of the panelists for our Recovery Panel at the One-Year Celebration! - SMART Recovery Oak Cliff!

Eugene Barnes is a Baltimore City native in long-term recovery and the Senior Volunteer Manager for The Phoenix, where he supports volunteers across Texas and Oklahoma. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Southern New Hampshire University and has a background in corporate retail management, having worked for major brands such as 7-Eleven, Macy’s, and Gap Inc. Eugene also served as an Aftercare Specialist and Facilitator at a leading drug rehabilitation center in Northern Michigan.

Before transitioning into nonprofit and recovery work, Eugene had an 18-year career as a professional ballet dancer. He began his career in 2004 with Carolina Ballet, where he rose to the rank of Soloist in 2009 and was twice nominated for the prestigious Princess Grace Award. He also performed with Paul Mejia International, Grand Rapids Ballet, and Avant Chamber Ballet, where he later served as Director of Training and Principal Dancer. Eugene retired from ballet in 2022.

Melanie Salinas is a dedicated Recovery Coach at Nexus Family Recovery Center in Dallas, Texas. Born in Patterson, California, and raised in South Texas, her personal journey through mental health and substance use challenges has shaped her commitment to supporting others in their recovery. Since beginning her own recovery on January 7, 2017, Melanie has rebuilt her life, including regaining custody of her children and restoring meaningful family relationships. Currently pursuing her degree at the University of Texas at Arlington’s School of Social Work, Melanie is working toward her goal of earning a master’s degree in social work. She is deeply committed to serving underserved and marginalized communities, advocating for equitable access to recovery and mental health resources.

Outside of her professional and academic pursuits, Melanie is a proud mother of two and a new grandmother. She continues to use her lived experience, education, and compassion to inspire hope, promote healing, and drive positive change in every community she serves.

We are excited to announce Sandy Lorden as one of the panelist for our Recovery Panel at the One-Year Celebration! - SMART Recovery Oak Cliff!

"Hi, I am Sandy. I am a dedicated and passionate addiction professional with a strong background in substance use counseling and clinical management. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Tarleton State University. My work is centered around building relationships with local resources to ensure comprehensive care for the clients I serve in my community.

Recovery is my passion, and I take a hands-on approach to life. I am actively involved in strengthening my community by volunteering with various organizations. One of my most rewarding experiences has been teaching a recovery class to incarcerated women in the Reentry Program at Tarrant County Jail.

I am also an active member of NAADAC (National Association for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors) and TAAP (Texas Association of Addiction Professionals), where I proudly serve on the board for the Fort Worth Chapter of TAAP. Through these organizations, I advocate for addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery services on a local, state, and national level, frequently visiting legislators in Austin and Washington, D.C., to advance the field for addiction professionals.

My dedication to this work has been recognized through awards such as the Fort Worth TAAP Counselor of the Year, Professional of the Year, and the SAMHSA MFP Fellow of the Month. I am committed to making a lasting impact in the field of addiction treatment and recovery, ensuring individuals have the support and resources they need to heal and thrive.

I love spending my days with my two children, making memories together. You can often find me working in my garden, what I like to call 'dirt therapy.' I also enjoy being outdoors and attending live music events and festivals."

We are excited to announce that our musical guest for the One-Year Celebration! - SMART Recovery Oak Cliff will be Nigel Newton!

Multi-instrumentalist Nigel Newton began composing at 13, inspired by video games and wind ensemble music before discovering jazz, rock, funk, and soul. Also influenced heavily by post-modern and classic science fiction literature, surrealist art and the occasional kale salad, Nigel strives for a unique musical voice and versatility. After relocating to Dallas, TX, he produces, arranges, records, and tours internationally with a number of bands from around the country.

Javier Enriquez is a co-founder of the Dallas Social Q***r Organization, co-founder of Sunrise Movement Dallas, and is the Community Engagement Coordinator at Prism Health North Texas. He is an Oak Cliff native, first-generation American, and has a decade of community organizing experience with a particular focus on empowering the QTPOC (q***r, trans, and people of color) community and sustaining movement building through strategic joy.
