There’s a certain kind of joy watching your little ones play with their holiday toys, but remember to make sure the toys are safe and free of potential hazards ahead of time. Toy-related injuries accounted for more than 200,000 visits to U.S. emergency rooms in 2018. Try to:
-Look for toys with a solid, sturdy build and avoid toys that can break, get crushed or pulled apart easily.
-Check the label for fire hazards and to ensure the toy has passed a safety inspection.
(Tip: Look for the letters "ASTM" which means it has met the American Society for Testing and Materials standards.)

And please avoid:
-Toys with small parts and sharp edges
-Electric toys with heating elements
-Guns or other toys that shoot flying objects
-Crayons and markers not clearly labeled "nontoxic"
-Toys with ropes and cords

Nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. has obesity, a serious health condition that puts children at higher risk for developing other conditions, including asthma, sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes. Research shows it also raises the risk for developing severe COVID-19.

In addition to eating a healthy diet and getting 60 minutes of physical activity each day, getting enough sleep is an important part of preventing childhood obesity. Here are some simple changes to sleeping habits that can help.

HCA Healthcare

Thank you to HCA Healthcare for sharing one of the many ways we heal tiny hearts 💕

Did you know? Congenital heart defects (CHDs) affect approximately one in 100 births every year in the U.S. and are the most common type of birth defect.

“The good news is that many babies diagnosed with congenital heart disease go on to live long and completely healthy lives,” says Dr. Kristine J. Guleserian, medical director of the Congenital Heart Surgery Center at affiliate Medical City Children's Hospital.

Soon after birth, our patient needed immediate expert pediatric care and was brought to Medical City Children's Hospital. Our Congenital Heart Surgery Program team diagnosed her with an Obstructed Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR), a rare congenital heart defect in which all four pulmonary veins do not connect to the heart correctly. Within hours of birth our physician, Dr. Kristine Guleserian, performed an emergent surgical repair to fix the baby's heart.

Today, she has gone home and is doing well. Her parents are so thankful for the compassionate, attentive care provided by our Congenital Heart Surgery Program. She is loved by her care team!

Camp Brave Heart

Registration time!!!!! 🙌🏼😊

To finish out Heart Week, the camp applications have officially gone LIVE! Before applying, please read the following letter from our Medical Director, Scott Gatlin. Please find the link to our online application at the bottom of this post. GET EXCITED!

Dear Campers and Camper Families,

I hope the New Year has been happy and healthy for you all!

We are excited to announce that Medical City Children’s Hospital will have our Second Annual Camp Brave Heart this summer. For those new to the camp, this is our summer camp for patients with congenital or acquired heart disease. Given the success and positive feedback we received after our inaugural camp, this year we will be extending the ages to include children who are 7 through 16 years of age and we will be extending the camp to 4 days. The children should have either congenital or acquired heart disease and have been cared for by the team at Medical City Children’s Hospital. Camp Brave Heart will be from Thursday June 7th through Sunday June 10th and it will again be held at Collin County Adventure Camp (CCAC) in Anna, Texas about 45 minutes north of Medical City Children’s Hospital.

We are excited to partner with Collin County Adventure Camp in this endeavor given their experience in providing camp experiences for other medically fragile populations. The 4 day camp will involve many fun activities, including, but not limited to, zip lines, archery, swimming, fishing, making new friends, conquering new challenges, and experiences we will always remember!

Our applications will again be online through CampDoc, a leading company in the field of online registration and electronic health records for summer camps! This online capability will allow us to make the application process easier for you, and even more importantly will allow for an electronic medical record to be created for you child (an advancement shown to improve both safety and information availability in the medical field). The following link (http://app.campdoc.com/register/braveheart) will take you to a unique site designed by CampDoc, and will allow you to set up your account and complete your child’s application. Repeat registrants should use the same login information from last year and much of your registration information will carry forward. The CampDoc company offers a support group to help with questions which can be accessed once you register, and there are also numerous resources that can be found through Google by referencing CampDoc and a particular question. Brooke, Amy, and I are also happy to try to help with any questions.

When applying, you will choose the option for “Camper, 2018” under the Registration section and decline the protection plan. Please make sure you have started the registration by March 31st, 2018 as no new registrations will be allowed after that time. All materials must be completed by April 30th, 2018. These deadlines ensure that our staff has enough time to review medical information, and to plan for staffing and accommodations.

Of particular importance will be making sure your child has had an appointment in the preceding year with your cardiologist so we can have an up to date physical exam, medication list, and medical history along with current echocardiograms, EKG’s, and any other testing your child has required in the past year.

Completion of the above steps does not guarantee your child’s admittance to the camp. Applications will be reviewed to ensure our ability to safely provide an incredible camp experience for all of our campers. We reserve the right to refuse acceptance to anyone for any reason. Also, if camper demand exhausts our staffing ability or the space available at CCAC, applications will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Therefore please complete the entire application as soon as possible.

If you are unsure your child will be attending camp, I encourage you to start the application process anyway. Our final deadline of April 30th, 2018 needs to be upheld, and we will rely on you to finalize your decision by this date out of respect to other campers. Please email us if you have any questions, concerns or roadblocks with the application process.

Camp Brave Heart is looking forward to continuing what we hope will become an incredible yearly tradition for your children. We hope to see our campers return every year so we can all grow together! After all applications are reviewed, you will be notified via e-mail of your child’s acceptance to camp and as to what time your camper may check in on Thursday June 7th and be picked up on Sunday June 10th. Please notify us prior to the start of camp if you will need to pick up your camper early.

Please feel free to contact us by email ([email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]) with any questions you may have, and I look forward to seeing you all this June!

Sincerely,

Scott Gatlin, M.D.
Medical Director
