As human beings, we naturally form habits...

We develop patterns in the way we think, the way we act, and the way we feel. ♻️

When we’re conscious and intentional about the types of habits we develop, they can help promote positive and productive development. We cultivate a kind of mental efficiency. We don’t have to think about what we’re doing–we just do it.

When we allow bad habits to develop, we can fall into negative cycles that mire us in unproductive or destructive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

One of the most effective ways to examine our habits, ensuring that they’re working to our benefit, is meditation. 🧘‍♂️

The sensitive awareness we lend to our thoughts when we meditate brings us to a heightened level of consciousness. We’re able to more objectively observe and understand the patterns by which our minds operate.

And coming from this place of consciousness, we’re better able to make productive changes to the way we think, feel, and act. We can more clearly define our motivations and see with sharper vision why we do the things we do, separating true desires and intentions from those that are no longer serving us.

💬 Inspire us: What’s one practice that helps you form conscious habits?

LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS. The levels range from a state of alertness to a sleep state. There are no rigid boundaries setting off one level to the next. The levels blend into each other and can be generally defined as follows:
ALERT: Normal intellectual functioning. Normal reflex and motor response. Example of activity: You are hiking on a trail.
LIGHT TRANCE: Daydreaming. Relaxation of body. Slowed breathing and pulse. Withdrawal into self. Direction of attention to imagined activity. Example of activity: You are idly thinking of taking a hike.
MODERATE TRANCE: Loss of awareness of surroundings. Increased awareness of internal functions (breathing and heart rate). Increased receptivity of senses. Intensified imagery. Literal interpretation of speech. Example of activity: You are imagining yourself on a trail hiking.
DEEP TRANCE: Relaxation and limpness of body. Narrowing of attention. Increased suggestibility. Loss of environmental awareness. Heightened function of creative process. Example of activity: You physically feel yourself hiking.
SLEEP: Suspension of voluntary exercise. Severe reduction or absence of conscious thought. Example of activity: You are dreaming of hiking.
The three middle levels are the ones in which behavior modification occur most readily.
It has been my experience, that people experiencing hypnosis for the first time generally stay in the light to moderate trance state. Then when they realize how good it feels, they will allow themselves to go into a deeper trance.
Yes, I have had people fall asleep (and snore) and that's ok too. Your subconscious mind is still hearing what I am saying. That's why I caution people not to fall asleep with the TV on (unless you want to buy every late-night hawked gadget).

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE HYPNOTIZED?
The experience of a hypnotic trance not so unusual or strange. To the contrary, it feels vaguely familiar to countless other moments in your life where you were absorbed in a zone, lost in thought, enthralled by bliss, or perhaps simply meditating. Meditation is actually the closest you can come to a state of trance without being guided there, as you would experience in hypnosis. I often refer to it as taking my clients on a journey, a metaphorical trip in your mind or imagination.

There are countless ways to enter a trance. It is similar to falling asleep just not losing conscious awareness. That means that you are able to hear and sense things around you but, typically your eyes are closed, you are not moving, just resting comfortably relaxed. Amazing things happen when you relax on purpose. You should notice that your breathing slows down and most of your muscles become relaxed. There is this sense of distance from where you are, the passage of time gets distorted and often you feel a pleasant, almost euphoric state of peace.

The depth of a hypnotic trance varies, it can be very light or extremely deep. When you feel comfortable with the hypnotherapist, you are willing to "let go" to and allow yourself to enter a trance, then you can experience the special power of the mind and imagination. The power of hypnosis does not depend on the depth of the trance, rather it is a matter of skills the hypnotist has to help you experience something special.

As you enter hypnosis, you actually disconnect your mind from the body and surroundings. That means that your awareness is withdrawn from the normal alert state you walk around in and goes inwardly. The power of hypnosis is your ability to harness the full potential of your imagination without the normal restrictions of the critical mind. This is when a skilled hypnotherapist can help you make dramatic changes in your life. The hidden power of trance is in the suggestions you listen to and how much you embrace these new ideas.

Hypnosis does feel very nice and relaxing, almost like taking a nap. The big difference is in what you are guided to experience during the trance. There are many unusual effects that hypnosis can have on a person. An example of a famous one is the arm levitation, where your arm rises up with a distinct sense that you are not doing it intentionally. There are many strange sensations a person can have during a trance which can only happen under hypnosis; none of these can cause you any harm or pain. Remember, that you cannot be hypnotized against your will, it works only if you agree to let it happen. So, perhaps you are now getting a bit more curious about taking a journey and exploring the hidden labyrinth of your mind.-from Psychology Today

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is not mysterious or supernatural although it has long been associated with sideshows and faith healers. You have been in a hypnotic trance literally thousands of times. You didn't notice because it is a NATURAL state of mind.
Chances are, at one time or another, you have found yourself driving along a familiar route and you suddenly became aware of where you are and wondered how you got there. This is common.
This is possible because everything you have learned is stored in your subconscious. Because you have learned to drive, your driving skill is stored in your subconscious. Because the route is known, it is stored also. This frees your conscious mind and it tends to drift off, allowing your subconscious mind to become more active. When your attention is needed to change lanes or exit the freeway, for example, your conscious mind comes into play again
Driving is only one example of an automatic activity, Other examples might be, being engrossed in a movie, mowing the lawn or jogging. When you do something automatically, your conscious mind is diverted from your subconscious and you are likely to go into a hypnotic state.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT HYPNOSIS

When in a hypnotic state, the person is asleep or unconscious. FALSE.
Actually the complete opposite is true. Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation and characterized by an increase of attention, a sense of heightened concentration which tends to increase the receptivity of suggestion.

You will not remember anything that happens during your hypnosis experience. FALSE.
It is possible for some to experience a dreamy feeling or feel as if they are drifting between a state of sleep and being awake. After hypnosis, some people find they have a fading memory of the session, much like waking up at the end of a dream.

People can be hypnotized against their will. FALSE.
Once hypnotized you are no longer able to resist hypnosis. FALSE.
Since entering into hypnosis requires consent and cooperation by the client, it is impossible to hypnotize someone against their will. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. I act more as a guide to help you enter into a hypnotic state.

When entering into a hypnotic state, the client surrenders their will and can be made to do things they would not normally do. FALSE.
At all times, you are capable of making normal decisions during the hypnotic experience. People will not do anything that goes against their morals or values while in hypnosis. You will not cluck like a chicken unless you want to cluck like a chicken (and I would never ask you to do so anyway).

Some people cannot be hypnotized. FALSE.
The fact is it’s not a matter of whether a person can be hypnotized or not. The real question is will they allow themselves to be guided into hypnosis. Most people go into hypnosis easily once they understand that they will remain conscious and will not surrender their will. When a person has trouble going into hypnosis, it is their fear of a loss of control.

Only weak-minded and gullible people can be hypnotized. FALSE.
On the contrary, studies suggest that people with above average intelligence who are able to concentrate, are creative and possess a vivid imagination make some of the best subjects.

Deep relaxation is required to be in a state of hypnosis. FALSE.
Though a typical characteristic of hypnosis, is it not a requirement. The level of physical relaxation is not related to the effectiveness of suggestions provided during the session. Most people concerned about their ability to relax are pleasantly surprised to achieve just that.

Hypnosis is a truth serum and the client might reveal their deep, dark secrets. FALSE.
Once again, remember, you are always in total control. You decide what you reveal and what you do not.

You can get stuck and not come out of hypnosis. FALSE.
Only in the movies. No one has ever been stuck in hypnosis. I saw that episode of Gilligan’s Island also. Hahaha. Hypnosis is merely a natural, relaxed state.
