Oats (Avena sativa)

Oats are among the best nutrient tonic herbs for the nervous system and are also an excellent cardiac tonic. While the entire aerial part of the oat plant is considered useful, it is generally the green milky oat top, harvested before it has ripened, that is used in herbal preparation.

Those milky green tops are rich in silicon, calcium, chromium, and magnesium. The ripened dried oats, used in making oatmeal, are also soothing and nutritious. Oats contain several active alkaloids, including trigonelline an dgramine, as well as starch and B vitamins. The stalks of the oats, though not as rich in minerals as the milky oat tops, are also medicinal.

Both milky green oats and dried oats are indicated for stress and anxiety and are soothing to irritated inflamed nerve endings. They are frequently used for treating NS disorders, depression, anxiety, low vitality, irritability, and urinary incontinence. Oats provide energy by increasing overall health and vitality. Easy to digest. Easy to grow.

Fabulous as a nutritive tea and may be combined with Lemon Balm as a good nervine! Combine oats with digestive bitters for any digestive upset. Add Oats (both dried oats and the milky green tops) for a lovely and soothing bath to calm the nerves and help irritated or itchy skin.

Do you have a favorite nervine to help soothe your nerves?

In good health, Rosemary

If you have a deck, play along!

Post a video of you pulling your card. ( I'd love to see your beautiful faces) Or let me know what card you drew in the comments below, and I'll let you know what your card means to me.

Here's what I pulled using Zolar's vintage 1965 Astrology deck:

THE QUEEN OF SWORDS
(A self-sufficient person, total honesty)

The Queen represents: Receptive, Mature Feminine energy.

Swords represents: Struggle, Conflict, Intellect.

Associated with Air signs: Libra, Gemini, Aquarius.

Keywords: Just, Witty, Intellectual, Intimidating, No-Nonsense, Independent, Delt With Loss & Sorrow ( This card usually refers to a dark-haired, brown-eyed woman; sometimes represents a widow. Indicates loneliness, separation & tears)
