Your friend gets your joke. Your co-worker offers congrats. Your spouse hugs you hello. They are all helping you bust stress and boost well-being. In fact, Mental Health America found that 71 percent of people surveyed turned to friends or family in times of stress.

•Humans are social animals: We crave feeling supported, valued and connected.

Research points to the benefits of social connection:

•Increased happiness. In one compelling study, a key difference between very happy people and less-happy people was good relationships.
•Better health. Loneliness was associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure in a recent study of older people.
•A longer life. People with strong social and community ties were two to three times less likely to die during a 9-year study.

How does exercise help depression and anxiety?

Regular exercise may help ease depression and anxiety by:

•Releasing feel-good endorphins, natural cannabis-like brain chemicals (endogenous cannabinoids) and other natural brain chemicals that can enhance your sense of well-being
•Taking your mind off worries so you can get away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression and anxiety

Regular exercise has many psychological and emotional benefits, too. It can help you:

•Gain confidence. Meeting exercise goals or challenges, even small ones, can boost your self-confidence. •Getting in shape can also make you feel better about your appearance.
•Get more social interaction. Exercise and physical activity may give you the chance to meet or socialize with others. Just exchanging a friendly smile or greeting as you walk around your neighborhood can help your mood.
•Cope in a healthy way. Doing something positive to manage depression or anxiety is a healthy coping strategy. Trying to feel better by drinking alcohol, dwelling on how you feel, or hoping depression or anxiety will go away on its own can lead to worsening symptoms.

About one in five teenagers in the United States have experienced a major depressive episode, or persistent feeling of sadness or hopelessness, at some point, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hundreds of schools nationwide are now allowing students to take "mental health days" during the year. According to the Child Mind Institute, a nonprofit specializing in kids' mental health, a mental health day is a day off from school to rest and recharge.

Students are able to take a number of excused absences from school — varying among states and their respective laws — due to mental or behavioral problems, similar to a sick day.

There are currently 12 states where students are legally allowed to take mental health days: Washington, California, Illinois, Maine, Virginia, Colorado, Oregon, Connecticut, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Kentucky. Additionally, there are five states where bills for mental health days have been proposed, including Florida, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania

It may seem counterintuitive, but sitting still can be an utterly transformative experience.

Our society encourages us to always do more, and faster -- and then tomorrow, to do even more, and be faster still. The problem is that most of us lack the skill to be alone and quiet for even short periods of time, always distracting ourselves by sending another text or checking email or flipping the channel. When our brains are always on overdrive, how do we ever get a sense of what's really going on underneath the madness?

To paraphrase French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and philosopher Blaise Pascal, "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." I absolutely believe this to be true. I knew that slowing my mind down would be helpful, but it seemed stuck on fast-forward. My brain was totally in charge of where it took me, until I learned a few basic techniques to gain control. And it doesn't take hours to stop the spinning: Even just five minutes of sitting quietly can have a transformative effect on your entire day.

Life Development®
Life Development® is what differentiates our treatment paradigm from any other. For those that need more than our traditional services and are stuck in life for whatever reason, Life Development® can help get you un-stuck. Life Development® is not a system. It’s not a process. It’s not a program. We actually place individuals from a team to spend time personally with you and work with you in your private world. This could be at your home, during stressful times in the day or at any other activity where it would be beneficial. It could look like 4 hours 5 times a week, or for some, it could be 24/7 for a defined period of time. We simply help you create new behaviors that eventually become habit. We provide advice, moral support and guidance. We live alongside you (outside of therapy) to help you develop routines and patterns that create a positive, fulfilling lifestyle.

What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.1 Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, poor mental health and mental illness are not the same. A person can experience poor mental health and not be diagnosed with a mental illness. Likewise, a person diagnosed with a mental illness can experience periods of physical, mental, and social well-being.
