Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute

Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute Helping Texas become a national leader in treating all people with mental health needs.

Mental health issues impact every Texan, if not directly then economically. The Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute launched to identify and encourage implementation of improved mental health policies and practices in our state. More importantly, the Institute hopes to remove the stigma associated with mental illness and enable Texans to get help when and where they need it.

Last Tuesday marked a very special evening for the Meadows Institute as close friends and supporters gathered in Dallas to celebrate Tom Luce, our founding CEO, and the lasting impact his work has had on Texas.

Tom’s vision and selfless public service have made our state a better place in countless ways, especially in his commitment to improve mental health care. Without Tom’s pragmatic and transformative leadership, none of the hundreds of policy advances and the billions of dollars of public funds invested in mental health by the State of Texas since the Meadows Institute’s founding would have been possible.

To carry Tom’s vision forward for generations to come, we were proud to announce the creation of the Tom Luce Policy Fund, which will sustain and accelerate life-changing policy efforts to improve mental health care. Reflecting Tom’s belief that mental health care should be treated with the same urgency as cancer or heart disease, the Fund will help ensure that Texas continues to lead the country in mental health innovation and impact.

We are deeply grateful to Deedie Rose, Carolyn and Karl Rathjen, and Margot Perot and family for their generosity and leadership in helping make the Tom Luce Policy Fund a reality.

If you would like to learn more about the Tom Luce Policy Fund and how it supports our ongoing work to improve mental health care in Texas, please contact philanthropy@mmhpi.org.

The Paso del Norte Center, a regional center of the Meadows Institute that is based in El Paso, has been awarded a landmark gift from the Hunt Family Foundation to improve the mental health of residents in the region. Members of the El Paso community gathered yesterday to discuss how this gift will expand access to quality mental health care through a range of policies and programs.

“Our Paso del Norte Center has been helping El Paso lead the way in building a mental health system that truly meets people where they are for more than three years,” said Meadows Institute president and CEO Andy Keller.

"The generosity of the Hunt Family will help more families get the care they need, when they need it, and it provides a powerful example of how strategic philanthropy can turn policy into real change for real people, improving lives and strengthening communities across Texas.”
