There are 5 things that may cause interference in breastfeeding success:
1. The delivery of your baby has a lot to do with the initiation of breastfeeding. The length of your labor, medical intervention, mode of delivery, and gestation at the time of delivery. Some of these things we have little control over. Expressing your desire to breastfeed to your medical team and creating a environments to promote breastfeeding can make a huge difference in your breastfeeding journey.
2. Unnecessary supplementation can sometimes appear as necessary when it is recommended by a caregiver. When supplementing, the parents milk should always be the first choice, then donor milk, before the introduction of formula. If supplementation is recommended, ask the questions and make sure you have a firm understanding as to why it is being recommended.
3. Feeding your baby per hunger cues is a prime way to ensure they are getting the milk they need. Timing feeds to every 3 hours may cause a drop in blood sugar or at minimum a "hangry" baby! Angry baby's are much harder to latch to the breast than a calm baby.
4. Going hand-in-hand with scheduled feeds, sleep training can hinder the establishment of breastfeeding or cause a decrease in milk production leading to supplementation.
5. Many parents don't know where to go for help with lactation or when breastfeeding questions arise. Find a pediatrician that truly supports breastfeeding and that will work with local breastfeeding centers.
Having a support team is a great way to reach your breastfeeding goals!
