Axis always has good information for those relating to teens. Emphasizing the relationship and communication with teens is exactly what they need during this stage of life!

We leave so many things left unsaid with our teens. As parents and trusted adults, we can sometimes avoid being vulnerable with them. Sometimes we feel as if we need to always be strong for our families, especially for our teens. Being vulnerable and bringing your teens into your story can be a great bonding experience for you and them.

Conversation Starter Suggestions:
👍 Consider telling them some stories from your teen years, such as popular movies, what you did for fun, summer vacation memories, friendships, and dating.
👍 Show them the house where you grew up and the school you attended. Describe your high school experience.
👍 Tell them about how you and your spouse met.
👍 Describe how you find strength each day.
👍 Share your testimony with them. How did you come to know Jesus?

What are some things that you wish your teens knew? Share those things with them one topic at a time so as not to overwhelm them. 😀

Tips for parents when talking with children about tragic events. Thanks Shelly McClellan Melia for this helpful information.

Our hearts break over the tragedy of the elementary school shooting in Uvalde. We lament the precious lives that were lost, and we pray for the families as they process their grief. Our Children’s Ministry Program Director Dr. Shelly Melia has prepared a few tips for parenting through this tragedy. May these tips equip you to minister to the school-aged children processing the crisis.

1. Measure and share truth according to each child's needs.
Just as we make adjustments in medication dosages for children relative to their age and weight, we must measure the amount of truth we give children based on age and cognitive development. Simple explanations (without a lot of graphic details) are best for very young children.

2. Limit media exposure.
Allowing children to watch ongoing and repeated television coverage of the event can be traumatizing. Children often do not understand the difference between the past, present, and future. Counselors who worked with children during 9/11 found that some children thought each time they watched television coverage of the planes flying into buildings it was happening again. Remember, the television is not the only media source that needs to be monitored. Tablets, phones and other digital devices with internet access provide unfiltered access to information that may not be suitable for children.

3. Pay attention to the adult conversations your children may be hearing.
Adults must monitor their own conversations and recognize that children have an extra sensitive radar towards listening to adult conversations during times of tragedy and uncertainty. This is particularly true if parents are not actively addressing the event in conversations with their children.

4. Model appropriate emotional responses to the event.
Children take their cues by watching the important adults in their lives. Too much emotion can be scary for a child. However, an absence of emotion denies the child an opportunity to learn how to express difficult feelings.

5. Initiate conversation.
If you have elementary aged children you can assume they have heard about the event. Rather than avoiding the discussion, turn it into a teachable moment. Listening well to kids during tragedy is equally as important as talking well to them. This should be a dialogue and not a monologue. Listen for cues from your children that may reveal their concerns or fears.

6. Be honest.
There are things we do not know or understand. However, there are also some things we do know that will bring comfort to the child. Here is an example of an honest response to a difficult question: “Lexi, I do not know why this happened to so many children. I do not understand how someone could do something like this and it makes me very sad. What I do know is that I love you and I am going to do everything in my power to keep you safe. When bad things happen, we help each other and God promises that He is close to people who are hurting and sad. God also asks us to help those who are hurting. Our family can pray for the people who have been hurt and we can ask God to show us other ways to express our love and concern.”

7. Look for God in the midst of the event.
Point out people God is using to help the victims and their families. God’s people rise to the occasion when bad things happen. In the absolute worst of times, children can often see the very best in their community of faith. The body of Christ is beautiful to watch during times of crisis. Make sure you are emphasizing where God can be seen so that children can experience the blessing of hope and comfort in the midst of tragedy.
