It's okay to not be okay. Sometimes, extra self-care is essential. Normalizing reactions is key, but so is normalizing therapy and mental health resources. Have you felt this?

The urge to jump into 'fix-it' mode is strong, especially when seeking quick solutions. It's easy to want to feel good, feel better. But sometimes, the rush to fix overshadows truly understanding the problem. Have you felt this?

When was the last time you saw a man really cry?

Not in a movie. Not after a big win or a crushing loss.

But in real life...safe enough to let it all out, no guardrails, no apology.

For a lot of men, that space doesn’t exist.

They’ve been told two completely different stories since childhood:

“Man up. Don’t cry.”

“Be open. Be sensitive.”

It’s no wonder so many struggle to know if vulnerability is strength or weakness.

In Episode 59 of The Millennial Life Podcast, I sat down with therapist Michael Ashenfelter, LPC-S, who’s spent years helping couples understand what’s really happening beneath the surface.

We talked about:

Why “shutting down” isn’t a lack of emotion—it’s a survival strategy

How avoidant and anxious-avoidant attachment play out in relationships

Why repair and NOT perfection is the glue that keeps love alive
The quiet emotional attunement millennial men are bringing to the table

Michael’s work is a reminder: men feel deeply. The real question is.....can we create relationships safe enough for them to show it?

Why is vulnerability so hard for men—and how can understanding attachment styles transform relationships? In this episode of The Millennial Life Podcast, host...

Lost in the noise? Sometimes, finding direction means tuning into your own inner compass. "Missing" pieces can guide the way back to what truly matters. Have you felt this?

When couples get stuck in reactivity, it's often a sign they've hit a wall. Attachment styles can play a huge role in how partners navigate stressful dynamics. It's like looking at the surface vs. the deep roots.

Boundary setting can be a great thing for couples. Coming together and communicating what you are and are not okay with as a unit—it can really strengthen a relationship. "Doing this in a way that is respectful" is key.

Have you felt this?

Navigating in-laws? It's easy to blame them, but so much comes down to our own expectations. Remember, "it's you" — it's about navigating your own growth while accepting a new family.

When it feels like everyone trusts you *except* the one you're closest to... that disconnect can be jarring. It's not about proving your worth; it's about forging a deeper connection beyond performance. They don't want a show—they want *you*. Have you felt this?

Modern Relationships

Hey there! Welcome to the page.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the owner of Millennial Life Counseling.

At MLC, we are a group of devoted therapists who have taken it upon ourselves to understand the trends and influences of millennial relationships and marriage in the modern age. Our mission is to stay current with what it's really like to be single, dating, committed, married, or just trying to figure life out in today's consumer culture and technologically driven world. We want to help you not only survive, but thrive in your life and relationships.

We specialize in helping millennial couples create the most epic marriages and relationships possible, starting from the very beginning with premarital counseling. Relationships today require an understanding and practice of the tools that work in today's world. There are many outdated relationship practices that no longer serve the needs of couples. We bring research-based and effective practices to our work with couples, and equip partners with the tools to give (and GET) the kind of love they want.
