What a Spooktacular Day in Nephrology!
Congratulations to Ha Nguyen, M.S.N., APRN, AGACNP-BC, for being awarded the APP Celebration Week Achievement award- Outstanding APP in Clinical Practice. In the words of her colleagues: Ms. Nguyen is “a joy to work with” and “[a] staple of our Nephrology department in regard to everyday clinical practice.”
Congratulations to Denise K. Link, M.P.A.S., PA-C, for being awarded the APP Celebration Week Achievement award- Outstanding APP in Teaching. In the words of her colleagues: Ms. Link is “an exceptional and extraordinary teacher. She has a gift for communicating not just in the classroom or conference room, but one on one with trainees, providers, and patients.”

Last day of the month and last Profile. Andrea Venable, PhD, is a postdoctoral research fellow. She is working with
Sarah Huen, M.D., PhD, on how metabolic adaptation promotes survival during sepsis and how the kidneys contribute to systemic metabolism during inflammation.
Fellow Profile: Litty Thomas, M.D. She is a first year fellow. Selected the field of Nephrology for her deep-rooted interest in patient care and building long-lasting personal relationships.
Fellow Profile: Taylor Schaubschlager, D.O. She is currently our chief fellow. The past three Nephrology Fellow Chiefs have been women. She enjoys serving and caring for a wide demographic of patients.
Fellow Profile: Meredith McAdams, M.D. She is currently on her second year of T-32 research and is pursuing her Master's Degree in Clinical Sciences.
Fellow Profile: Stefanie Herrera, M.D. Her interest in Nephrology grew as she recognized the influence the renal system has on the entirety of the organism; the complex pathophysiology that correlates multiple organs at once.
Next for we are going feature our fellows. We are so glad we have these outstanding fellows in Nephrology.
Advanced Care Provider Profile: Ashily Skaria. She just joined our Nephrology Division a few months ago. We are happy to have her with us and providing care to our patients.
Advanced Practice Provider Profile: Ha Nguyen. Pre-COVID, she organized all division social events. She is an excellent preceptor and has won a number of awards for her hardwork and dedication.
Advanced Practice Provider Profile: Denise Keller Link. She has been with us for 14 years. Her true passion is education both of students and medical providers and to patients and their families and desire to keep patients off of dialysis all the while advocating of their individualized quality of life.
During the past 14 years of PA Link’s nephrology practice and education to students, she has seen first-hand how CKD and kidney failure disproportionately affects older, minority and low-income individuals. The US anticipates a shortage of physicians to treat those with kidney disease during the next decade. The current disparities--- by ethnicity, socioeconomic status and geographical location---among those with kidney disease will worsen as a result of this physician shortage. PA Link’s long-term goal is to help create the 1st APP (Advanced Practice Provider) Nephrology Fellowship in the US aimed at training APPs in clinical nephrology to reduce the workforce gap thereby increasing the 40 million US individuals with kidney disease access to kidney care thereby reducing disparities associated with CKD and kidney failure.
Advanced Practice Provider profile: Sandy Diep. She cares for patients in our CKD clinic. She has also received many PACT awards.
Advanced Practice Provider Profile: Christina Chemmachel. Christy has been with us since she did her preceptorship at UT Southwestern.
For month, we would like to recognize our APP staff. They do extraordinary work and are an asset to our division. They provide wonderful care to all patients in the hospital or in the clinic.
Faculty Profile: Stephanie Torres Rodriguez, M.D. She just finished her fellowship with us in June and stayed on with us as a new faculty member. She is passionate about providing care to the underserved population.
Faculty Profile: Shani Shastri, M.D. Dr. Shastri provides excellent care to her patients and has been awarded for it. We are looking forward to reading and reviewing the book.
Faculty Profile: Bethany Roehm, M.D. Dr. Roehm is one of our brand new faculty. She will be doing clinical research with patients as well.
Faculty Profile, Nilum Rajora, M.D. Dr. Rajora is a Medical Director at a few of our Dialysis units. She works closely with the International Society of Nephrology as an Educational Ambassador. Her global health work is outstanding.
Profile Denise Marciano, M.D., PhD. The goal of Dr. Marciano’s research is to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive kidney development and repair after injury. She uses a variety of cellular, genetic, and biochemical approaches to study these processes in renal tubules and the filtration units of the kidney, called glomeruli. She has received several grant awards to support her research laboratory, including awards from the March of Dimes and the NIH.
Profile, Swee-Ling Levea, M.D. Dr. Levea is one of our transplant faculty she is growing our living donor program. It has doubled the volume of patients, improved the evaluation process and given better access to the transplant team. In 2019, she in collaboration with Dr. Jaclyn Albin won the Internal Medicine Innovation Award for culinary medicine program to empower living donors with healthy lifestyle. She is currently serving as co-chair of the SWAG Professional Development subcommittee.
Profile: Swati Lederer, M.D. Dr. Lederer the Associate Program Director for the Fellowship. She is a wonderful mentor and advocate for the fellows. Dr. Lederer is passionate about helping our Veterans and providing them the best care.
Faculty Profile: Eleanor Lederer, M.D. Dr. Lederer is well known for being American Society of Nephrology President. She was the Division Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension, Interim Associate Dean of Research, and Interim Chair of Medicine for the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She holds the Endowed Title of John S. Fordtran, M.D. Professorship in Calcium Research. She is researching regulation of PTH, phosphate, and calcium in chronic kidney disease. Women in Medicine Faculty Profile, Ronak Lakhia, M.D. She was a former fellow with us and is doing research on understanding the pathogenesis of polycystic kidney disease and identifying potential treatments for this genetic disorder.
Faculty Profile Pooja Koolwal, M.D.
Dr. Koolwal cares for the underserved dialysis population at Parkland. Her clinical interests include home dialysis modalities, women’s health in nephrology and resident education.
Faculty Profile: Sadaf Khan, M.D. Dr Khan has a special interest in diabetic nephropathy, chronic kidney disease, and dialysis. She provides excellent care to the dialysis patients at Parkland Hospital.
