What would cause my ankle to hurt without injury?
Ankle pain does not always follow a clear or dramatic injury. In many cases, discomfort develops gradually and may seem to appear without an obvious cause.
Common underlying reasons include tendonitis from repetitive overuse, arthritis from cartilage wear over time, or ankle instability related to old sprains that never fully healed. These conditions can progress quietly before symptoms become noticeable.
Nerve compression, flatfoot or high arch mechanics, and inflammation within or around the joint can also lead to persistent discomfort. Lifestyle factors such as poor footwear, prolonged standing, or repetitive stress on hard surfaces may further contribute to pain.
Even subtle alignment changes can increase joint stress, leading to swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility over time. When ankle pain develops without a specific injury, it often signals an underlying condition rather than random irritation.
Because the source of pain can vary significantly, proper diagnosis requires a thorough and individualized evaluation. As a Dallas foot and ankle surgeon, I focus on identifying the root cause and building a personalized treatment plan designed to restore comfort and long-term function.
