During the season of giving, toy safety is crucial in protecting children and other gift recipients. To help remind all gift-givers to buy wisely, Prevent Blindness America has designated December as Safe Toys and Gifts Month. Parents and friends of children can take steps to facilitate safe gift-giving this season by making sure the toys they buy for young ones are appropriate and safe.
Here are some great things to look out for:
- Avoid presents with sharp edges, points, or spikes.
- Steer clear of toys that could shatter or break into small debris upon impact. This also includes products that a child can pull apart easily.
- Include a helmet or other PPE if buying sports gear.
- Avoid toys with heating elements, ropes, or cords

The primary disease that is a direct result of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy affects your retina, the thin membrane that lines the back of your eye. The retina is needed to see, as it translates the light that passes through your eye into impulses sent to your brain. It does this through special cells called photoreceptors.
Blood vessels can be cut off in the retina when blood sugar is elevated. If this occurs, it can cause existing blood vessels to swell and leak, making new blood vessels grow out of control. These new blood vessels can cause scar tissue to develop on the retina. This damage kills photoreceptors, eventually causing vision loss. The retina cannot regenerate, so the damage done is irreversible.
Diabetic retinopathy also shows no symptoms until there's vision loss. Regular eye exams are vital for diagnosing and treating the condition early to slow further damage.

September is Healthy Aging Month!
One in six Americans age 65+ have a vision impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. The risk of eye disease increases with age, but lifestyle can help prolong healthy vision. Two tips: wear sunglasses and stay active. Just make sure your sunglasses protect against UV-A and UV-B rays. And, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a long-term study of more than 15,000 people found that people who were physically active and drank occasionally experienced less vision loss over 20 years than those who didn't exercise or drink at all.

With kids back in school, it's a good time to remind everyone that August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month.
If you're bringing your child in for annual eye exams, you're doing great! But it's important to know that eye problems can develop between yearly exams. If you observe any of the following signs and behaviors, consider scheduling an appointment: your child's eyes are red or watery, they cover one eye or blink often, they hold books or screens too far or too close to their face, their eyes tend to wander, or if their head hurts after homework or looking at screens.
These are just a few things to look out for. Call us with any questions or concerns. We're happy to discuss!
