FOOTBALL & AC JOINT SEPARATION | If you follow your collarbone to where it meets the front of your shoulder, you will find your AC joint. The AC joint can get injured—or “separated”—in a fall or from a blow to the shoulder.

🏈 This type of injury is especially common with cyclists who fall forward onto an outstretched arm, as well as in contact-sport athletes, like football players.

🏈 There are six types of AC joint separations, varying in severity. Type 1, 2, and 3 can typically be treated with nonsurgical options, including rest, ice, pain medication, immobilization in a sling, and physical therapy. For more severe separations, however, surgery is typically recommended.
