🫀 Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders in older adults and a major risk factor for stroke.

AFib occurs when the heart beats irregularly, allowing blood to pool and form clots that can travel to the brain.
What makes AFib especially dangerous is that many people have no warning symptoms at all.

Common symptoms may include:
• Fluttering or racing heartbeat
• Lightheadedness or dizziness
• Shortness of breath
• Ongoing fatigue

⚠️ Silent AFib is real.
Up to 30 percent of older adults may feel no symptoms while their stroke risk continues to rise.

Early detection and consistent monitoring can help reduce complications, prevent hospitalizations, and protect long term heart health.

📞 If your loved one has AFib or is at risk for heart rhythm problems, skilled nursing care at home can help monitor symptoms, track vitals, and support safe ongoing care.

✨ A new year brings a fresh chapter.

The start of a new year is a chance to pause, reflect, and look ahead with hope.
For many families, it’s also a reminder to check in — on health, on routines, and on the people we love.

Better care doesn’t always mean big changes.
Sometimes it’s the small things that matter most:
• staying consistent with medications
• keeping up with appointments
• moving a little each day
• asking for help sooner, not later

As the year begins, we’re grateful to continue caring for individuals and families in the place that matters most — home.

To our nurses, therapists, caregivers, social workers, office team, patients, and families: thank you for trusting us and for being part of the HomeAssist community.

May this new year bring steadiness, comfort, and moments of peace.

Christmas is a time for care, connection, and gratitude.

This season reminds us that health is more than medical tasks or schedules.
It’s about being present.
It’s about showing up.
It’s about caring for people in the moments that matter most.

Christmas can bring joy and togetherness for many — but for others, it can also bring quiet challenges, health concerns, or feelings of loneliness. All of those experiences deserve compassion.

We are deeply thankful for:
❤️ Our nurses, therapists, caregivers, social workers, and office team who give their best every day
❤️ The families who trust us inside their homes
❤️ The patients who allow us to be part of their journey

From everyone at HomeAssist, we wish you a Christmas filled with warmth, comfort, and moments that truly matter.

If you or someone you love needs support during the holidays, we’re here.

🕯️ Hanukkah is a reminder that light can grow, even in quiet and challenging moments.
As families gather, it’s a time to reflect on resilience, care for one another, and the comfort found in simple routines shared at home.

May each candle bring warmth, reflection, and moments of connection throughout the week.

Wishing peace and light to all who celebrate Hanukkah.

A sudden drop in appetite isn’t just part of getting older. When a senior starts eating less, it often points to an underlying issue that needs attention. Mood changes, dental problems, infections, and medication effects can all make meals unappealing or uncomfortable.

Early awareness is important because poor intake can lead to weakness, weight loss, dehydration, and a higher fall risk.

If you notice a loved one skipping meals or losing interest in food, it’s worth looking for the cause rather than assuming it’s normal aging. A little support can make a big difference in their strength and comfort.

📞 HomeAssist nurses can help monitor weight changes, check for medication-related symptoms, and support safe, steady nutrition at home.

Blood pressure medications work best when taken at the right time — but many seniors take them on irregular schedules, or mix morning and evening doses in ways that throw their BP off balance.

When timing is off, the body may experience:
• Morning dizziness from low overnight BP + a fresh morning dose
• Nighttime spikes if medications wear off too early
• After-meal drops when digestion pulls blood flow away from the brain
• Higher fall risk from sudden, unpredictable BP swings

These patterns can feel random, but they often follow a clear rhythm connected to:
🕒 the timing of doses
🍽 meals
💧 hydration
😴 sleep cycles

💡 Small adjustments in medication timing can dramatically improve stability, reduce dizziness, and prevent dangerous falls.
But these changes should always be guided by a clinician — not guessed.

📞 If your loved one struggles with dizziness or unpredictable blood pressure, HomeAssist nurses can review medication schedules, monitor vitals, and help create a safer daily routine.

Bathrooms are the #1 fall location for seniors — not because of one issue, but because several risk factors happen at the same time.
Wet tile, poor lighting, quick position changes, and limited balance support make the bathroom the most hazardous room in the home. These falls often lead to hip fractures, head injuries, and long recovery times — but most risks can be reduced with small, targeted changes.

📞 Even small bathroom modifications can prevent serious falls.
HomeAssist PT/OT can help identify the right grab bars, seating, lighting, and safe-transfer techniques for your loved one’s needs.

🦵 Muscle loss isn’t just “getting older” — it’s a medical condition called sarcopenia, and it can progress quickly without the right support.

As adults age, the body naturally loses muscle mass, but when this loss accelerates, it affects:
• Balance and stability
• Ability to stand, walk, or lift safely
• Reaction time during slips or missteps
• Overall strength and independence

Sarcopenia can be triggered or worsened by:
⚠️ Chronic illness
⚠️ Low physical activity
⚠️ Poor nutrition or low protein intake
⚠️ Hormonal changes
⚠️ Long periods of inactivity (after surgery, injury, or illness)

The danger?
Less muscle = more falls, slower healing, and reduced ability to perform daily tasks.

💡 The good news: muscle loss can be slowed and improved.

Targeted strengthening, proper protein intake, and guided movement help rebuild stability and confidence — but these must be done safely and consistently.

📞 If your loved one is showing signs of weakness or reduced mobility, HomeAssist physical therapists can create a personalized plan to rebuild strength and reduce fall risk — right at home.
