There is new evidence that some common household chemicals are pushing a huge increase in Parkinson's Disease. Use the simplest products you can to clean your home, but office products like correction fluid, gun cleaners, dry cleaning chemicals can also be culprits. Check products for trichloroethylene (TCA) as the ingredient to avoid.

A common chemical that's used in everything from paint remover to dry cleaning solution may dramatically increase the risk of Parkinson's, 'the world's fastest growing brain disease.'

I hope you were able to have some positive family interaction over the Thanksgiving holiday. I know I sure enjoyed time with my family. Make plans to do something positive for Christmas and don't just get sucked into the commercialism of this time of year. We remember relationships long after the stuff has broken and been tossed aside!

Being thankful is one of the most important things we can cultivate to stay healthy mentally. Thanksgiving should be more than a holiday once a year, much more than turkey or football, but a way of living. It is hard to be depressed when we focus on gratitude!

As we go into the winter months, and can't get out in the sunshine, be sure to take your vitamin D3. If you haven't been taking it, you might want to get your blood level checked. Vitamin D is so important for many body functions, including healthy immunity. There are studies showing vitamin D deficiency is a risk for COVID infection.

.Enjoying some vegetables from the garden already, mostly lettuce and asparagus. Have several other things planted to enjoy later. Growing some of your own foods allows optimal nutrition as nutrition declines the farther you are out from harvest. Nothing like eating it less than an hour after picking it!

I can't understand the justification for keeping children out of schools. It is not coming from the medical studies I read.

A meta-analysis in JAMA Pediatrics found that children and teens had lower odds of becoming infected with the novel coronavirus than adults ages 20 and older, and the reduction in risk was more pronounced in younger children. The study, based on 32 studies involving about 42,000 youths and 269,000 a...

I just saw a medical study on how social isolation increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and all cause deaths. During this time of social distancing, make sure your reach out to friends and family via phone or whatever seems most appropriate to you to stay in touch. My county is just entering into phase 1 of returning life to normal. I plan to see people more and heap up some good social contact!

Having lots of social contacts is important for your health. It could be friends, relatives, a neighbor, your long time hairdresser, church members, card playing group, garden club, or more. Do you have someone to talk to? Someone who will miss you and call if you don't show up? We don't live as long if we are isolated. We are meant to be a social tribe. If you feel isolated or cut-off, reach out to someone. It takes being a friend to have friends. If you are too depressed to reach out, contact your health care provider and talk about it. There is help available.

Functional medicine

After 28 years of practicing family medicine, I took additional training in functional medicine. This training embraces a more natural, holistic look at the body and the root causes of disease. Making changes in my own diet and lifestyle, as well as getting to the underlying causes of my problems, made a big difference in my own health. I am pleased to be able to help my patients with these matters as well. None of our diseases are caused by a drug deficiency, so why are drugs the main treatment offered in medicine today? Our diet and lifestyle are far more likely to hold the keys and the answers rarely lie in a pharmaceutical prescription. We do use vitamins, minerals, herbals, and other phytonutrients, but also encourage diet changes, regular exercise, restful sleep, proper stress management, and healthy relationships.
