Practical Skills Clinic is closed on Monday, May 25th, 2026 in observance of Memorial Day. We recognize that days off, holidays, and breaks from routine can sometimes feel challenging for children and families. Here are a few simple ways to help make the transition more manageable:

• Keep routines as consistent as possible, especially around meals, sleep, and screen time.
• Talk about schedule changes ahead of time using simple language or visuals.
• Offer choices throughout the day to help your child feel more in control.
• Build in movement breaks, outdoor time, or sensory activities to support regulation.
• Practice communication skills by encouraging your child to ask for help, breaks, or preferred activities.
• Prepare for transitions by giving countdowns and reminders before changing activities.
• Keep preferred calming items or activities available during stressful moments.
• Try not to overload the schedule because downtime is important too.
• Celebrate small successes and flexibility throughout the day.
• Remember that behavior is communication; your child may need extra support during changes in routine.
• Model calm responses and use simple, consistent language during difficult moments.
• Reconnect after hard moments with comfort, reassurance, and support.

Most importantly, give yourself grace. Changes in routine can be hard for everyone, and small supports can make a big difference.

At Practical Skills we work hard to make communication the go to strategy by… making it the fastest, easiest, and most efficient option in the room.

So if vocal speech is too hard… we start by using buttons to communicate ”my way” because when words need to be retrieved in times of stress, they are not the go to option!

This means that if a child wants something to stop, or they want to do things their way… All they have to do is press a button to communicate it!

05/20/2026

Learning communication is a gradual process, but the investment is well worth it!

Children can spend several hours or even days learning communication that is easy, effective, and efficient…

The goal is to teach that their ”voice” has power and will be heard!

05/19/2026

Before a child is asked to cooperate, they are taught skills that help them safely and successfully navigate everyday situations.

That means learning how to:
➡️ Communicate
➡️Respond
➡️Cope
➡️Stay regulated

within the moment, instead of relying on unsafe behaviors.

Because when unsafe behavior is no longer the fastest, most effective, and efficient way of getting your basic needs met…communication takes its’ place!

Skill Based Treatment builds cooperation over time by first building safety, understanding, and connection!
