Practical Skills Clinic is closed on Monday, May 25th, 2026 in observance of Memorial Day. We recognize that days off, holidays, and breaks from routine can sometimes feel challenging for children and families. Here are a few simple ways to help make the transition more manageable:
• Keep routines as consistent as possible, especially around meals, sleep, and screen time.
• Talk about schedule changes ahead of time using simple language or visuals.
• Offer choices throughout the day to help your child feel more in control.
• Build in movement breaks, outdoor time, or sensory activities to support regulation.
• Practice communication skills by encouraging your child to ask for help, breaks, or preferred activities.
• Prepare for transitions by giving countdowns and reminders before changing activities.
• Keep preferred calming items or activities available during stressful moments.
• Try not to overload the schedule because downtime is important too.
• Celebrate small successes and flexibility throughout the day.
• Remember that behavior is communication; your child may need extra support during changes in routine.
• Model calm responses and use simple, consistent language during difficult moments.
• Reconnect after hard moments with comfort, reassurance, and support.
Most importantly, give yourself grace. Changes in routine can be hard for everyone, and small supports can make a big difference.
