As this article points out, patients may have decent tested visual acuities (20/30-2) yet still have difficulty seeing what they want to see. Magnification devices can help patients meet their specific visual goals which may be reading the small print they are accustomed to reading. A recent study showed that elderly patients with AMD had a 75% increase in falls as compared to those without AMD (https://www.mcknights.com/news/elderly-adults-with-amd-face-75-percent-higher-fall-risk-new-study-reveals/). Make sure that in addition to having your patients make some home improvements (increased lighting, higher contrast rugs/objects), consider providing them contrast-enhancing absorptive filters which can help them better see objects in their way.

A new study examining age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among elderly residents in Egyptian geriatric homes revealed connections between this vision condition and dangerous falls.
