Movement is medicine. 💊

Dr. James Nitzkorski shares reasons why staying active can help lower the risk of developing cancer, including keeping inflammation in the body and stress levels in check.

The best part? It doesn’t have to be hours at the gym. A walk with a friend, a quick bike ride or shooting hoops with your kids all count. Adding a social element makes it more fun and more sustainable.

GLP-1 medications are changing the conversation around heart health. ❤️

Originally used to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity, these medications are now showing promising benefits for cardiovascular health — including lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke.

But who should consider them? And what are the potential risks?

Benjamin Schaefer, MD, cardiologist at Nuvance Health, part of Northwell Health, breaks down:

✔️ Who may be a candidate
✔️ How GLP-1s support heart health
✔️ What side effects to know

Not every heart is the same. Neither is heart surgery.

This American Heart Month, attention is turning to a lesser-known advancement in aortic valve surgery called Y-incision aortic annular enlargement (AAE). This specialized technique is designed for patients whose anatomy does not fit a one-size-fits-all approach. 🫀

By safely creating more space at the aortic valve, this procedure allows surgeons to implant larger, longer-lasting valves, improving blood flow and helping patients avoid future procedures.

At Danbury Hospital, this surgery is performed by Kenneth Hassler, DO, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with advanced training from the Mayo Clinic and the University of Michigan. His expertise allows patients to access complex, high-level heart care without leaving the region.

Sometimes progress in heart health is not louder. It is smarter.

Many women aren’t familiar with Lp(a), or just how closely women’s health and heart health are connected. ❤️

During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal changes can affect more than how you feel day to day. They can also impact heart health in ways many women are never told to look for.

In this episode of The Dusty Muffins podcast, Nuvance Health interventional cardiologist Dr. Sunny Intwala joins menopause experts to explore the connection between estrogen, Lp(a) and cardiovascular risk during perimenopause and menopause.

This discussion explores what may be happening if you’ve been reassured by a “normal” lipid panel but still don’t feel quite right. Sometimes standard tests don’t tell the full story, and Lp(a) can be an important piece of the puzzle.

In 2026, are standard lipid panels really enough to assess someone’s risk of a cardiovascular event? 🤔🫀

This American Heart Month, Nuvance Health interventional cardiologist Dr. Sunny Intwala sat down with the hosts of The Dusty Muffins to break down what heart risk assessment looks like today and why growing awareness around Lp(a) is changing the conversation.

From menopause and cardiovascular risk to what should actually happen after an initial assessment, this conversation goes beyond the basics.

This month, we Wear Red to stand with women everywhere. ❤️

Heart disease is the number one and often silent killer of women, responsible for 1 in 3 deaths each year. These are not just statistics. They represent our mothers, sisters, friends, coworkers, neighbors and ourselves.

Morgan Olivieri, Assistant Manager of Patient Care at Danbury Hospital’s Cardiac Cath Lab, shares her why:

“I wear red because in the Cardiac Cath Lab, we meet people on some of the hardest days of their lives, and we get to help turn those moments into hope, healing and second chances. I never got to meet my Pop Pop.

He passed away from a massive heart attack before I was born, so I wear red for him and for every ‘Pop Pop’ out there that we can help save. As the Assistant Nurse Manager of the Cath Lab, it fills my heart to be part of the moments where lives change and families get more time together.”

Is pancreatic cancer treatment working? A new blood test may help answer that question sooner. 🩸🔬

People facing pancreatic cancer often have limited time and few options. Knowing early whether chemotherapy is working can make a meaningful difference in care decisions and outcomes.

New research from Nuvance Health, now part of Northwell Health, published in Society for Translational Oncology, explores how a simple blood test may help care teams understand treatment response earlier in the process.

By studying tiny particles in the blood called extracellular vesicles, researchers identified early changes in a protein called MASP2 that may signal whether chemotherapy is effective.

Shatovisha Dey, PhD, senior scientist at Nuvance Health, shares how this research could help transform uncertainty into earlier answers — and hope — for patients and families facing pancreatic cancer.
