Metabolic Syndrome involves a number of conditions related to the inability to properly use glucose. Insulin no longer works effectively to metabolize glucose and more and more is needed to accomplish the job of maintaining normal glucose in the bloodstream. This is known as insulin resistance.
Over time, this failure of insulin can lead to Type II diabetes and be related to many other disorders including atherosclerosis, hypertension and lipid abnormalities, fatty liver, systematic inflammation, s*x hormone derangements, increased coagulation, immune system dysfunction including increased risk of viral infection, dysregulation of the gut bacteria, nervous system dysfunction and even certain cancers.

Too much insulin can cause serious health problems. For instance, The Quebec Study found that an insulin level of 13 uIU/mL correlated with an 8-fold higher heart attack risk than a level of 9.3 uIU/mL.(N Engl J Med. 1996 Apr 11;334(15):952-7) The Reference Range for fasting insulin in the blood is 0 - 24.9 uIU/mL

Eating excessive refined carbohydrates, added sugars and other highly processed foods causes excess triglycerides to form in the blood. This blocks the hormone leptin, which influences appetite and satiety, from passing through the blood brain barrier so the message to stop eating may not be delivered. Over the past 60 years rates for obesity in adults and children have increased tremendously.

In 1864 when a lay person in London, William Banting, wrote his Letter on Corpulence stating that a high sugar, high carb diet, was the cause of his obesity. In 1972, Dr. Atkinsโ Diet Revolution explained that restricting carbs can reduce appetite and help lose weight. Today, there are many diet programs to guide us, but simply understanding some basics can be the trigger to make diet changes.
The Healthy Eating Pyramid, from the Harvard School of Public Health provides good information on diet. Exercise and supplements can be helpful, but always consult your physician to guide your path to better health!
